There was the thundering of footsteps along the earthen passageways, and then a swarm of small dragons filled the tunnel, their speed rivaling that of a flock of angry harpi. The adult Pearlcatcher flattened himself against the wall, pearl tucked against his back, and watched as the hatchlings rampaged past. Once they were gone, he relaxed and resumed walking. As they passed a room, a furry blue head poked out. "Were those the hatchlings?"
The Pearlcatcher nodded. "Rei must be holding an event."
There was a laugh, and then the Tundra fell into step beside him. "I'm glad they're excited for it."
"You say that like you know what's going on."
The fluffy dragon shook his fur, and stood a little taller. "Of course I do. By the way, where are you headed right now?"
He stopped. "I'm going to the kitchen. Is there something you need me to do?"
"Did no one tell you?"
"You might have to repeat it if they did, as I clearly don't know what you're talking about."
The Tundra grinned toothily. "You're being made a Scoutmaster."
"I'm being made a…what?"
"You're gonna help out Rei! You've been asking for a job since you joined us, and this seemed perfect!"
He clasped his pearl in both hands, rubbing it. "I asked to be a scout, to be part of the patrols, the fighting team. Not…hatchsitting."
The Tundra snorted, and then started pushing the Pearlcatcher. "Get a move on, we're going to be late. You really ought to have more faith in your abilities and the hatchlings. Being a Scoutmaster isn't hatchsitting in the slightest. You're teaching them!"
The Pearlcatcher snorted, but started walking in the direction the stampede had headed. "Big difference."
"No really. Have you ever been to a Scout meeting? You'll be primarily teaching them to fight, since Rei's oath prevents them from really teaching them any further than self-defense. And you'll probably also be put in charge of the Hatch Patrols. Normally Mal does it, but she has no patience with them, and they can barely keep up with her pace." He took a deep breath. "Rei will teach you the ropes, and I've seen how well you worked with the hatchies before. You might even be better at it than them, since you've had a nest of your own! Don't worry, it'll be fun, and you'll still be out doing patrols and fighting like you wanted."
The Plague dragon sighed, and scratched his claws across the bamboo flooring. "I don't really have a choice here, so whatever."
He scoffed, and moved to brush the reeds of the door out of the way. "Just give it your all. I believe in you."
And then the Pearlcatcher was pushed outside, and as he blinked, eyes adjusting to the sudden sunlight, someone caught sight of him.
"Seizon!"
He glanced over, and spotted the crowd of hatchlings, and their leader, a white Pearlcatcher holding a cyan pearl. He sighed, and walked towards them.
Rei navigated the swarm with enviable ease, and nodded in greeting. "I'm, I'm so glad you could make it. When you, ah, didn't respond to the letter, I wasn't certain you'd actually gotten it. I was going to contact you in person….but our paths just never crossed."
The letter was sitting unopened under a pile of hide.
Pearlcatcher grabbed Pearlcatcher, and they strode towards the decorated bamboo grove where all of the Scout activities started from. The hatchlings followed noisily, chattering and stomping and tripping. Some of them wore flower or bark garlands in imitation of the band that Rei wore, although Seizon noted that some, especially the Mirrors, had bones woven in. It was reminiscent of home enough to make him smile.
They entered the grove, and he was pulled towards a large stump that was decorated and set up in such a way that it looked a smaller version of the Exaltion Pillars. The young dragons filled in the rest of space, forming a circle around them as they perched on every available surface. The Spirals wrapped themselves around the bamboo trunks and branches as the Faes flitted about in the air, and the Imperials coiled around the roots. Seizon's own children were sitting scattered about, but watching him with the same pride he'd watched them with when they broke from their eggs.
His attention was drawn back to the other adult dragon when they cleared their throat. There was a woodland band clutched in their hands, a different one than the one already on their forehead. "Scouts, we gather here today, not to welcome another batch of young ones to the world and to our fold, or to say our well wishes to those of us who have grown and ready to help in wider world, or even to, organize and run in a clan-wide or flight-wide event. Today we are here to welcome a new leader, someone who we can look to for guidance, and for lessons that not even I could teach. Seizon, you are here to take on the role of Clan Scoutmaster. Do you know the Scout pledge?"
The Plague dragon blinked. Eloquent speeches were not what he expected to come out of his fellow's mouth. "No."
"Ah. Then I will speak it aloud, which, I was probably going to do anyways." They coughed, and set their pearl on the stump. "To be a Scout is to be filled with duty and honour. A Scout is to be chivalrous, and to be kind. A Scout is to always put their best claw forward, whether it is in service to the deity or to the clan or to the flight. To be a Scout is to always be ready and accepting to learn, and to consider any lesson we are taught. It is to remember that anything in this world may have a lesson to teach. We respect each other, and we respect the world and all things in it. Seizon, to be a Scoutmaster is to be a Scout for life. We not only teach others, but we learn from others as well. It is our duty to pass what we learn onto the next generations and to exemplify all aspects of a Scout. Do you feel you are capable of this?"
"I…." He closed his eyes, and took a deep breath. To be a Plague dragon was to live by the rules of the land. When he was a hatchling, the world had seemed to large and cruel. But he'd learned from it. He learned how to stay alive, and how to thrive. Wind was not as hard, or cruel, and the dragons here were equally soft. Perhaps this Scout Oath was not the same as the adage he'd lived by in his younger years, but it was closer than he'd ever expected. Perhaps Wolf was right. "I am." The band was placed over his head.
"Welcome to the Scouts then."
