~ History of the Astromancers ~

The Fae are the children of the Arcanist, created in his image. This fact is well-known far and wide, to even the deepest crevices and fissures of Sornieth. What has eluded most is the existence of the Arcanist's chosen children, a family of Fae known as the Astromancers. Upon his creation of Fae and their inherent magical properties, the Arcanist himself blessed two particularly powerful Fae mages with the gift of astromancy. Astromancy is the magical manipulation of stars and the very cosmos themselves into doing the bidding of the Astromancer. This ability was once exclusive to the Arcanist himself, but no longer.

The Fae that he blessed were known as Borealis and Australis, said to be born of both peace and honor. Once common Fae of their own right, both Borealis and Australis showed mastery of the arcane arts and commitment to the Arcanist himself, and each other. It was eons ago now that the Arcanist summoned the two, little Fae to his Observatory. It was here, beneath the great telescope that the Arcanist gifted the two Fae with the priceless knowledge of astral manipulation.

From that day forth, Borealis and Australis donned hides made of the galaxies themselves. Their wings became thin and transparent, useful to see the stars through and all the better to glide with. Most curious of all were the small, dancing fireflies that followed the Astromancers wherever they journeyed. It is said that each firefly is the ethereal manifestation of a star that the Astromancer commands, always at the ready to do their mage's bidding. Oddly enough, the fireflies that adorn the Astromancers are reminiscent of the Arcanist and his Fae.

Borealis and Australis live a content life by the side of the Arcanist in his grand Observatory, leaving only rarely. Their children, born under the marvelous telescope itself, sport the same mysterious galactic hide, transparent wings, and bustling fireflies as their parents. As hatchlings, they frolic and play at the feet of the Arcanist. He is known to occasionally pause and admire the offspring of his greatest creations, bonding with them in a way that is mysterious even to the Astromancers who call him their god.

Upon maturity, Borealis and Australis tutor their children in the mystic arts of astromancy. They learn to be great battlemages, able to turn the tides of a battle in an instant. Raining the destruction of the very stars themselves upon the fields of war, an Astromancer is able to take on vast hordes of enemies unscathed. An Astromancer in battle is a glorious thing to witness, truly. The image of a tiny Fae commanding starfire and the arcane lights in a brilliant display of power leaves most dragons awestruck - and relieved that this little one is not an enemy.

Due to the tumultuous time that the dragons of Sornieth live in, Astromancers have only just recently begun to leave their home in the Observatory. Already, talk is spreading like wildfire. Clans across Sornieth, from light to shadow and plague to nature, are actively seeking to recruit an Astromancer for the sheer power that they exhibit in battle, as well as the vast troves of knowledge that they carry of the stars and the magical arts.

While always fiercely loyal to the Arcanist, they often find themselves right at home in the clans of other deities. Fae as a breed are mysterious and difficult to read the emotions of, and Astromancers are no different. However, it takes little time for the young Astromancer to take warmly to their new clan, and vice versa. While they will never forget their roots and the god they call their own, Astromancers are a valuable addition to any clan in Sornieth.

This oddly warm and loving nature of Astromancers has seen their kind reaching further than ever before. With a blessing from the Arcanist himself, even those who are not the descendants of Borealis and Australis have begin to learn the mystic art of astromancy. Some apprentices seem to be more gifted than others. Only the most powerful of Astromancers have developed the starry fireflies of their predecessors. Yet, all Astromancers don the galactic hide that is the custom of their kind.

~ Australis' Biography ~

Australis is the oldest Astromancer, having been born a few weeks before her eventual mate, Borealis. She was born into a colony that inhabited a sheer cliff face on the outskirts of the Starfall Isles, a place dubbed to be the edge of the world. While her nest-mates opened their eyes to a vast swath of unexplored oceans, she opened hers to the stars. As she looked upon the twinkling lights for the first time, she saw a dark figure fly far overhead. She was much too young to realize just who this was.

Australis' immediate fascination with the stars quickly gave way to intense dedication and study. The elders of her colony saw immediately the potential she carried to be a powerful mage, and she was made an apprentice very early in her life, long before most. She was taught the importance of energy as it relates to magical abilities and how Arcane dragons inherently hold much more of this energy than those born to other flights. Whispers in the night spoke that Arcane dragons were especially blessed due to the intense energy of the stars that shone upon them, always.

Australis remembers the night of her summoning as though it were yesterday. It was a particularly starry night, brightly lit up blue, yellow, and pink. Her colony had always said that nights like this pleased the Arcanist, who would be able to see even the most distant of stars. However, it seemed as though he more focused on his subjects that night than his stars as a sprite carried a message to the young mage. She was summoned to the Observatory, a great honor never before seen in her ancient colony.

Mere hours later, Australis stood in the great observatory, kneeling before her god beside another Fae. This other Fae was particularly interesting as he was both familiar and a stranger, as mysterious as the reasoning for her summoning. The connection between them was immediate. Borealis, as he called himself, quickly became her friend and lover as the two trained under the Arcanist. Through hard-work and intense dedication, the two of them persisted. They hoped to be truly worthy of the honor of serving the Arcanist.

Over the course of many years, Australis and Borealis stayed in the Observatory as His wards and apprentices. It was one fateful night, as starry as could be that the Arcanist blessed the two Fae with the knowledge of Astromancy as they stood beneath the great telescope, bathed in the twinkling lights of distant stars. Australis shut her eyes tight as the intense magicks poured over her small body. She shuddered, and slowly opened her eyes once again.

The changes were immediate. Both Australis and her mate were now made of the stars themselves, the galaxies swimming over their scales like pools of pure arcane energies. Their wings turned transparent and became thin, akin to the insects that they would chase as hatchlings. These changes were easy enough to become familiar with; they were small and mostly cosmetic. What Australis found difficult to adjust to were the small fireflies. The Arcanist spoke nothing of what these new arrivals were and Borealis had little to say on the matter as well.

It wasn't until their first clutch of eggs hatched that Australis fully comprehended their nature. Their hatchlings, a clutch of three, did not emerge from their eggs with their fireflies - Australis had not expected them to. Instead, they manifested over the course of several particularly starry nights. It was this that caused Australis to realize their purpose: these were stars.

The stars that she studied every night beside her mate and her god now physically manifested around her, her mate, and her children. When she cast a spell, one of the fireflies would flutter around the energies as she cast. If she flung starfire in battle, a firefly would dart past her as the attack flew towards the enemy. Her favorite was a large, bright yellow firefly that always hovered near her right claw. She called it 'Altair', after the star she believed it was the manifestation of.

Now, Australis and Borealis live a content life beside their god. They raise their children with the same magicks they learned and teach them all that they know of the stars and arcane magic. Soon enough, their children began to leave the Observatory. Australis sees her children off as they leave home, sorrowful that they journey away, but ultimately pleased that her children find happiness and spread the word and magic of the Arcanist across Sornieth.
