~ History of the Astromancers ~

The Fae are the children of the Arcanist, created in his image. This fact is well-known far and wide, to even the deepest crevices and fissures of Sornieth. What has eluded most is the existence of the Arcanist's chosen children, a family of Fae known as the Astromancers. Upon his creation of Fae and their inherent magical properties, the Arcanist himself blessed two particularly powerful Fae mages with the gift of astromancy. Astromancy is the magical manipulation of stars and the very cosmos themselves into doing the bidding of the Astromancer. This ability was once exclusive to the Arcanist himself, but no longer.

The Fae that he blessed were known as Borealis and Australis, said to be born of both peace and honor. Once common Fae of their own right, both Borealis and Australis showed mastery of the arcane arts and commitment to the Arcanist himself, and each other. It was eons ago now that the Arcanist summoned the two, little Fae to his Observatory. It was here, beneath the great telescope that the Arcanist gifted the two Fae with the priceless knowledge of astral manipulation.

From that day forth, Borealis and Australis donned hides made of the galaxies themselves. Their wings became thin and transparent, useful to see the stars through and all the better to glide with. Most curious of all were the small, dancing fireflies that followed the Astromancers wherever they journeyed. It is said that each firefly is the ethereal manifestation of a star that the Astromancer commands, always at the ready to do their mage's bidding. Oddly enough, the fireflies that adorn the Astromancers are reminiscent of the Arcanist and his Fae.

Borealis and Australis live a content life by the side of the Arcanist in his grand Observatory, leaving only rarely. Their children, born under the marvelous telescope itself, sport the same mysterious galactic hide, transparent wings, and bustling fireflies as their parents. As hatchlings, they frolic and play at the feet of the Arcanist. He is known to occasionally pause and admire the offspring of his greatest creations, bonding with them in a way that is mysterious even to the Astromancers who call him their god.

Upon maturity, Borealis and Australis tutor their children in the mystic arts of astromancy. They learn to be great battlemages, able to turn the tides of a battle in an instant. Raining the destruction of the very stars themselves upon the fields of war, an Astromancer is able to take on vast hordes of enemies unscathed. An Astromancer in battle is a glorious thing to witness, truly. The image of a tiny Fae commanding starfire and the arcane lights in a brilliant display of power leaves most dragons awestruck - and relieved that this little one is not an enemy.

Due to the tumultuous time that the dragons of Sornieth live in, Astromancers have only just recently begun to leave their home in the Observatory. Already, talk is spreading like wildfire. Clans across Sornieth, from light to shadow and plague to nature, are actively seeking to recruit an Astromancer for the sheer power that they exhibit in battle, as well as the vast troves of knowledge that they carry of the stars and the magical arts.

While always fiercely loyal to the Arcanist, they often find themselves right at home in the clans of other deities. Fae as a breed are mysterious and difficult to read the emotions of, and Astromancers are no different. However, it takes little time for the young Astromancer to take warmly to their new clan, and vice versa. While they will never forget their roots and the god they call their own, Astromancers are a valuable addition to any clan in Sornieth.

This oddly warm and loving nature of Astromancers has seen their kind reaching further than ever before. With a blessing from the Arcanist himself, even those who are not the descendants of Borealis and Australis have begin to learn the mystic art of astromancy. Some apprentices seem to be more gifted than others. Only the most powerful of Astromancers have developed the starry fireflies of their predecessors. Yet, all Astromancers don the galactic hide that is the custom of their kind.

~ Nirya's Biography ~

Nirya has always had a rather shy and reserved persona. She rarely speaks, and never to those which she does not know. The joke among her two clutch-mates was that she was so shy, she was even born last to avoid being in the spotlight. She spent much of her early life at the feet of the Arcanist, staring up in wonder as he scribbled away at the parchment before him. Nirya knew that He was aware of her presence, but He never shooed her away and seemed quietly content to have her beside him.

Over the years, Nirya became more and more comfortable with speaking to others, but was still painfully shy. When not beside the Arcanist, fetching inkpots as he needed them or acting as his personal paperweight, Nirya could often be found in the windowsills of the Observatory. There were only a handful of windows available to her, but each was perfectly Fae-sized, and they soon became her small sanctuary. Her favorite window was on the east side of the Observatory, as it looked out across Sornieth.

From her perch here Nirya could see the Behemoth, the Pillar of the World, and even the Beacon of the Radiant Eye, but only on clear days. She loved her home, and she loved her god, but was always too afraid to leave, even if she desired it. The day Aryon left was a humbling experience for her, seeing her brother set off on his next great adventures left Nirya in an uncomfortable place. Should she leave as her brother did, or stay as her sister would undoubtedly do? Despite her always quiet and shy nature, Nirya elected for the former and left not long after her brother, eager to see just how much she could grow and change as a person.
