Sender of the Exultant Order | Song: Gretchen Ross

To be a Sender for the Exultant Order is a holy station. As those who send the unworthy to the Ones Apart, Senders must be solemn, soothing, and, of course, unfailingly deadly. To send a servant to the Ones Apart in a crippled or unbecoming state would be most inappropriate, so the Order selects and trains Senders that can end a dragon's life as quickly and with as little bodily damage possible. Those who have had traumatic or near-death experiences themselves are seen as especially suitable, as they know better than anyone the value of a quick death. In this way, they can turn the suffering in their own lives into mercy for others.

Xana is a survivor of one such ordeal. Exiled from her own clan for practicing heretical magic, she was caught in a fierce blizzard with no end in sight. She had no choice but to try and fly through it as landing without shelter would surely be a death sentence in the storm, especially when the snow was so thick that she could not see what was beneath her. Eventually, frostbite overtook her wings, sending her spiraling out of the sky and crashing onto rocky crag below. She spent hours in the raging storm, broken and losing heat, certain she was going to die. By the time the blizzard had passed, she was barely alive. Fortunately for her, she was soon found by a raiding party of the Exultant Order, who brought the ailing Imperial back to their own territory. There, she was nursed back to health and taught of the Order's principles, which she gradually came to believe.

Xana now sees her role in the Order as giving others a kinder end than the one she nearly suffered. The magic that once saw her banished from her original clan is the gift she now grants others: a spell that stops the heart from beating. It requires no bloodshed, no weapons, nothing but a few ritual components and a gentle touch against a dragon's chest. She is often praised within the Order for the kindness and dignity of this method—though few dragons are willing to come within arm's length of her. She does not let their fear bother her. She knows that there are far worse fates than the one she offers.
