Biography
Jetsam
The Driftwood Doll
Foolhardy pride. That's what most dragons succumb to in the Tangled Wood. Thinking that nothing could possibly go wrong, how idiotic. Nobody knows what the waves of the Sea hold, least of all those not born in them, thinking them tame-able is truly a folly of pride.
That was how Jestam was created, isn't it? Someone thought the waves to be theirs, then paid the price. That's all Jetsam can assume about her beginnings, anyways. The first memory she had was coming to consciousness on a shore of smooth pebbles, waves gently pushing around her salt soaked wooden body, which had become the home of some small crabs that managed to chisel out a hole, around where an ear would normally be on a living body, into the skullpiece to escape from gulls. At this point of possession, Jetsam could not move of her own volition, therefore being unable to protest against being picked up by a plant loving snapper, and being taken back to her clan, no matter how much she wanted to have a say in the matter. Oh well. Beats being used a crab shelter, she supposed. |
After Jetsam was cleaned up and dried, she was given to a little blue guardian hatchling as a toy, and told to be gentle, as she could apparently fall apart very easy. The guardian had some sort of strange affliction concerning it's face, many half formed eyes covering the entire upper part of his face, rendering him completely blind. He was gentle with Jetsam's body, though, trying to have little tea parties and conversations with her, thinking she couldn't respond. He took her everywhere, keeping her safely upon his back as he wandered slowly through the cavern halls, occasionally bumping into others or objects. Either way, Jetsam was well loved by the hatchling, and she is very thankful for it.
Enough time had eventually passed, and enough effort had been put in, that Jetsam could faintly move her arms and legs, though just barely. She used this to her advantage, lightly tapping on one side or the other of the guardian to guide him away from something he would have otherwise bumped into. He didn't notice that then, but over time Jetsam became more and more bonded to the driftwood case, being able to move more and more, until she could fully, however slowly, articulate herself, though any sort of flight was not an option. The guardian, being unable to see, never quite knew this, but was aware his doll was doing things to help him. He was so excited to have a friend with him at all times now, he didn't have to pretend! The adults of the lair of course never believed him when he tried to notify them of this development, thinking it just childish imagination, but Jetsam knew, and helped the little guardian as much as she could. With enough practice, Jetsam learned she could speak! It took a monumental amount of effort for what only came out as a haunting whisper, but she found it worth it that her friend now had someone to chat to, someone to help him learn to use his weaknesses to his advantage, being his eyes as he is her wings. An inseparable, and wily, duo not to be underestimated, despite their diminutive size. |
