The King
Cirrus' mate, and gentle protector Kalen follows her everywhere she goes. He doesn't say much, but his silent passivity is genuine, rather than the show of one Cirrus gives. He protects his mate and her clan, but cares little for the politics and petty squabbles of leadership. That, he leaves to Cirrus. As long as his charges are safe and comfortable, he is content.
He has, in the time he has been with Cirrus, learned how to communicate with his wings and frills, though he is not as subtle as her. Kalen's story is longer than many think. Cirrus did not ask much, for she did not mind where he came from, but he certainly didn't just appear out of nowhere for her. Originally, he came from the Forum of the Obscured Crescent. His family was small by nature of his parents; his mother's charge (and mate) was a coatl who stubbornly resisted the call to the Ashfall Wastes, refusing to make their mate have to travel so far from home just to be with him. They had many children, but almost none of them stayed; the guardians all went to find their charges and all but one of the coatls were drawn back to the Wastes. Kalen was one of their last children, a tiny thing in the vibrant colours of his father with chubby cheeks and too-big wings. They loved him, and he loved them. He tried to stay as long as he could. He wanted to savour the time he had with his family. But soon enough as he got older he found himself waving a solemn goodbye to his home. It was time to find a charge. He travelled sornieth for many years, picking up all kinds of wisdom and skills as he did so. Some time in the Sea of a Thousand Currents had him learning how to swim, but he found no charge. Two years in the Ashfall Wates had him finding his father's family and leaving with blackened claws and beautiful armour engraved with their names, but still no charge. Several months in the Starfall Isles gave him a reputation there as a wonderful librarian, but still no charge. By the time he returned to the Tangled Wood, he had become a wise, but lonely adult. He was still quite on the large side for a guardian, and he had never really grown into his wings, but he had seen a lot of the world. He'd just... never seen what he was looking for. This was why he returned in the first place; he was hoping his mother might know how to help him find his charge, since all his efforts had been fruitless. So, after getting off his ship at the coast, he started to trudge home, going first through the Driftwood Drag and then up through the Foxfire Brambles, trying his best not to tear his clothing as he forced his way through spaces far too small for him. And then, he saw her. At first, he thought he'd seen some kind of little bird, but then he remembered the tiny dragons he'd met when he was at the Starfall Isles, so small that they'd sit on his wings with space to spare. They had all been brilliantly bright, but she was dark as the night sky, and smaller than he remembered them being. She could fit in his hand. She looked at him, and he looked at her, and she had soft round cheeks and wings a little too big and a stout little body and big dark eyes and his heart skipped a beat and Kalen smiled as warm as sunshine. He held out a hand and gave her his name. She could keep it forever if she wanted, if only she'd let him stay by her side. She didn't need to love him, that was okay. She probably had her own life with her own family. Just if he could be near her. So he asked if he could stay, and she said yes. He asked if she liked her, she said yes. She wanted him to run away with her, and he said yes. And they ran, and then they stopped, and they made a home out of wood and sap and Kalen slept at night curled up around the most priceless treasure in all of Sornieth, dreaming of whatever the next day would bring. |
