The first rule in Maman’s household is that nobody lies, and so when Maman tells Malcanthet to “Watch the shop, honey, won’t you, and I’ll be home in a day or two,” Malcanthet believes her. She doesn’t come home, though. And so they wake up every morning and set out a plate of fruit and a cup of coffee that will be cold when they get home, and they paint their face with blush and berry juice so they look human, and they go to watch the shop. “Your eyes look pretty today, Malcanthet,” says the woman who comes in on Sundays for bundles of rosehip and jasmine, “Are they new?” Malcanthet hums an affirmative-- the resin had finished curing only yesterday but they’d been too excited not to try them immediately. The irises are a gentle shade of lavender (Maman’s favorite color), and they sparkle blue-orange-pastel pink in direct candlelight. It matches their blush. They hope Maman will like it when she comes home tonight. She doesn’t come home, though. And so they wake up in the morning and pull on a sleeveless tunic (so as not to catch on their shoulder joints), and pour a cup of coffee that will be cold when they get home, and they go to watch the shop. “May I have a honey cake, sir,” Malcanthet says to the baker, passing by his stall on the way out of the market one night, “for Maman when she gets home?” The baker’s eyes soften, and he gives them the cake for free if they promise to come back and tell him how Maman likes it, and is even kind enough to offer to dye their hair so they’ll be extra pretty when Maman gets back. He colors it pink and puts it in a braid coiled on top of their head, and ties a ribbon in the loose strands next to their ear that sparkles like what they think the sun might. Like Maman’s eyes when she smiles-- like she’ll smile when she comes home tonight, and sees it. She doesn’t come home, though. And so Malcanthet wakes up in the morning, and pours a cup of coffee, and they go to watch the shop. |
