Pauin

Pauin Familiar Keeper - Page of Cups Pauin is a quiet, shy recluse on the outskirts of the clan, rarely encountered by visitors or strangers. He is a self-taught zoologist, and has a great interest in all the many varied creatures and growing things present in the Sea's clear waters. Somewhat accidentally, this interest led to his role in taking care of the larger creatures attracted to the clan, but which have not yet bonded with dragons as familiars. Pauin is afflicted with a stutter, which is totally absent when he's relaxed but comes out in force when he's talking to dragons he doesn't know well. This category includes almost all of Driftwood Shore, so he generally keeps to himself and prefers to potter about the tidepools in contented silence and associate with the beasts under his care. Pauin is exceptionally good at reading the many different types of animal body language; a skill probably originating in a Skydancer's natural empathic tendencies. It is quite a sight to see the skinny, fragile dragon calmly encouraging a hulking Warcat to roll over for inspection, or dragging around huge slabs of bloody meat for the clan's resident Hawksbill Goliath. To his great embarrassment, Pauin appeared on Random Dragon on Jan 21, 2018 at roughly 11:56 Flight Rising time.

History: Pauin had never seen living waters of such magnitude until he followed his heart and flew to the Sea of a Thousand Currents. He fell in love with the great lake and its fauna, and became a quiet face in the background of the clan. He weathered the War of Swords very badly, and was nearly overcome by Rennic's crystal poison. He is still plagued today by nightmares of battle and sickness from this time.

Physical: Pauin is a skinny, feathery bird of a dragon with little physical strength and long, gangly legs. His leafy green gems are natural and give him no ill-effects, and sparkle in bright light. He flies with typical Skydancer agility but with heavy wings and little endurance, and prefers to traverse along the ground. Similarly he has no strength for swimming, though he enjoys spending time in the Sea's shallows when the waves are calm.

Familiar: His own familiar resides in one of the deeper clan tidepools, discovered by Pauin during his fauna observations. The snail displays great affection for its Skydancer master, and will often leave the pool and attempt to slowly climb up Pauin's side in a slimy, wet embrace, forcing Pauin to choose between tolerating this slobbery affection or gently but firmly moving the heartbroken snail aside. When not enthusing with affection the snail makes a quiet and exceedingly patient companion, watching sometimes for hours by its dragon's side while Pauin observes in fascination the movements of tiny shrimp or the activities of spider crabs.

Glaymar: Pauin's best and only close friend, the shining Ridgeback shares with Pauin a difficulty in communication. Entirely comfortable around his huge clanmate, Pauin talks freely and without stutter; recounting to him the interesting things familiars have done that day or his latest observation on Sea life, or merely enjoying his silent companionship.

Beastclans: Although he is afraid of the beastfolk and their hostility, Pauin has made several trips to learn from them, particularly the Longnecks and their relationship with their mighty Warcats. His humble nature and frail build lend well to appearing non-threatening, and he has peaceful relations with a number of neighbouring groups. A kamaitachi trio have even taken to mooching free food off him, and hang around the familiar dens chewing grass stalks and looking menacing.

Offspring: Pauin found his first and only nest to be a mortifying experience, and is very unlikely to ever have another. Both of his children- stone-patterned Guardian sisters with a close bond- went out to the Sea in service of the Tidelord.
