A fragment of the Shade flutters across the corpses of an empty battlefield. Emotions aren't its forte - it runs off hunger, more than anything else - but it can't help feeling a flicker of amusement. So many dead at the claws of each other, and the remnants of the Shade had nothing to do with it.

It finds what it's looking for. A bloodied pearl, abandoned by its rotting owner. Slowly, like it has all the time in the world, it curls its way around the lustre, tasting the sweet tingle of magic. Yes, this will be a fine focus, so very fit for purpose.

This little piece of darkness grows and grows, it stretches itself as far as it can go. A head with two eyes and a mouth, four scaled legs, a thin tail. Armour, like the cadavers wear. Everything seems as hoped, for a moment, and then--
