Nylinmir Kerrhaushtis
The Star Devourer

Upon first glance, Nylinmir looks quite young, but in actuality is an arcane draconian of unknown age. She survives on cosmic and arcane magics and gets especially energetic when exposed to solar flares.

If she gets too hungry around mortal dragons, she'll slowly feed off the magic within them, occasionally killing younger dragons. She's been driven from many a pack because of this.

Because of her malicious tendencies, she's frequently driven from clans and territories by dragons and beastclans alike. How she's managed to slip her way into Ash Haven and not been driven away is, so far, a mystery. Perhaps Talek is keeping her nearby as a means of protecting others, or could it be more sinister than that?

Some say she's gathered a small following of dragons who feed her sacrificial beasts until she gains more power within the clan. They never meet face to face, but those who support her leave gifts of magical items alongside the hidden meals so she can find them on her own time. She can sense who left what, and only she knows who supports her cause.

Wind swirled along the plateau of the cliff, giving a pleasant reprieve from the warmth of the sun. It wasn't a hot day by any means, but the constant warmth bearing down grew to be too much sometimes, especially when one had a job to do.

A large, deep purple Ridgeback lounged on the plateau, right at the edge of the cliff, overlooking the canyon and it's river below. For those looking on, it would seem there was a heat haze above her, warping the air. A tiny speck flitted this way and that, almost unnoticeable. One would have to get really close to realize it was a Fae dragon, but most would rather keep their distance from the Ridgeback.

The Fae, Novabloom, weaved her arcane magic around Nylinmir cautiously. The Ridgeback had never opposed to her doing so before, but Nova knew better than to get complacent around her. Whatever Nylinmir actually was, was dangerous to the extreme, and it seemed that only Nova realized how dangerous she really was. It was Nova's magic that kept the Ridgeback in check, and she shuddered to think of the horror the world would face if she ever missed a day of her ritual.

The beast in question was dozing in the sun, not as active during the day as she was at night when the stars and their cosmic energy fueled her. Nova would finish up her ritual soon and find a cool spot nearby to sleep with her familiars. She would need her rest after all if she were to continue following the Ridgeback and learning from her. The knowledge she was gleaning from watching Nylinmir was invaluable.

Nova almost didn't notice the Guardian skulking around nearby, which was a feat considering his size. She hoped he would keep his distance, but it didn't seem to be the case. He was sneaking his way up the cliff, as if drawn to Nylinmir. Nova cursed her luck, she wasn't quite done with her ritual and who knew what would happen should this Guardian prevent her from finishing.

Abandoning the ritual for now, Nova flew down the cliff to meet the Guardian and warn him away. He didn't stop his approach as she made her way to him, but once she was in front of him and unmissable, he paused in his trek.

"I would turn around if I were you," Nova said, her monotone voice not carrying the weight of her warning very well. She folded her fans down and twisted them outward to convey the danger, but she knew this Guardian wouldn't understand that.

His eyes, the only part of his face visible through his hood, burned brighter than she was used to in an arcane dragon. They seemed to pierce into her soul. She suppressed a shudder, getting the unmistakable feeling that this dragon was just as dangerous as the beast she guarded.

"I don't take orders from the likes of you," the guardian rumbled, his voice seeming to shake the very air around Nova.

"It's not an order, sir, it's a warning," Nova flicked her fans to emphasize her point.

The guardian chuckled darkly, the sound sending a chill up Nova's spine. "And what on this cliff could warrant a warning?"

Nova looked at him as if he were stupid and gestured back toward the Ridgeback. "Sir, she is very dangerous and I would not like you to get hurt."

Those eyes narrowed behind the hood and the Guardian's head came up slightly. "Are you implying something, Fae?"

Involuntarily, Nova's fins went rigid with fear at the Guardian's tone. It took a bit of effort, but she smoothed them back down and spoke calmly. "I am not. I merely wish to protect everyone from her."

The Guardian huffed and started to walk toward Nylinmir again. "I need no protecting, Fae."

Nova darted back in front of him, though she longed to leave it. She couldn't though, to let these two clash would be devastating to the world. "Sir, I don't mean it like-"

The Guardian thrust his head into Nova's space, his eyes burning brightly. "Move before lose my temper."

Nova jerked back and resisted the urge to flee. She hovered there, trembling, debating, but she couldn't let him meet Nylinmir. "I'm sorry, but-"

Before she could finish her sentence, the Guardian raised an arm and backhanded her out of the way. The pain was instant, it felt like a boulder had landed on her. As she hit the ground and bounced, the only thing she could think of was how much danger the world was in. She hadn't finished her ritual, this Guardian was going to agitate Nylinmir, they were going to fight… Nova's world went black.

---

Lunar Psion, or Luna as he liked to be called, was drawn to the cliff by a type of magic he hadn't felt before. It was… mystical, powerful… He wanted to see what it was, if he could take it and make it his own, but unfortunately it seemed to be tied to a dragon.

The Ridgeback had feigned ignorance at his approach, but Luna could tell she knew he was there. At first, he thought the magic he was sensing was coming from the Fae's arcane spell she was putting over the Ridgeback. The lines of magic, invisible to most, shimmered in the sun as they slowly dissipated. The Fae was either dead or unconscious.

Luna had noticed the Ridgeback tense when he had swatted the nuisance out of the way. Was she attached to the little Fae? If so, so much for striking a civil conversation. Luna didn't care, he was only there to see the source of the magic he was sensing.

Nylinmir didn't turn as he finished his trek up the cliff, but she did speak. "What do I owe the pleasure?" she said, voice silky smooth. It was a voice that spoke of the stars, of age far beyond her physical presence. A dangerous voice.

"What are you?" Luna said, cutting straight to the chase. He never could stand small talk.

Nylinmir didn't speak right away, as if she was contemplating her answer. "What an odd question. I suppose you could say I'm magic incarnate."

Luna laughed and the Ridgeback tensed. "Arrogant, aren't you. You seem powerful, but you're not an incarnation of pure magic."

It seemed as if the heat from the sun all but disappeared as the Ridgeback slowly stood. She was graceful for her size, standing in one fluid motion and turning to face Luna. The first thing he noticed were her eyes. The icy light-blue was almost devoid of emotion. This was not a dragon that often showed mercy or affection, which made her reaction to the Fae confusing.

"Would you like a demonstration?" she asked, smiling in a way that did not reach her eyes.

"No need, I've seen enough," Luna said. Nylinmir's head tilted ever so slightly to the side. Luna shifted to show the collapsed Fae in the dirt behind him, turning his head to indicate that's what he was talking about, but definitely not taking his eyes off of Nylinmir. "You need only a puny little servant to keep you in check. You can't be that powerful."

Nylinmir's jaw tightened but her expression didn't change. "She's there to feed me, nothing more."

"So you can't get your own meal is what I'm hearing," Luna said. He wasn't sure why he was provoking such a powerful creature. Perhaps it was the thrill of seeing Nylinmir's eyes grow harder, her muscles tensing under thick hide. It had been far too long since he last fought someone of his caliber.

"Perhaps you'd like to be my next meal?" Nylinmir asked.

Luna almost didn't notice the feeling at first, the slight drain on his magic as if it were leaking. It took him a second to realize where it was coming from, and in that second the leak turned into a stream. Growling, he surged his powers and knocked Nylinmir's hold off of him.

"How dare you," he said, tensing himself. A dragon that could feed off of other's magic was a dangerous one, more dangerous than he had originally suspected. It was no matter though, she wouldn't pose much of a threat to him if that was the extent of her power.

Nylinmir chuckled, turning her head to the side and looking at him out of the corner of her eye. "What? You're surprised? You're only fit to be a meal to me. I look forward to feasting." Her eyes narrowed and her smile turned more sinister.

Luna huffed and summoned his ethereal disappearing pisces, sending them straight towards Nylinmir's face. Long since dead, Luna had preserved the two fish with his magic, turning them from flesh and bone to beings of pure darkness. Most dragons couldn't stand their assault, falling quickly to their magic, but of course Nylinmir wasn't most dragons.

With a wave of her wing, the two fish disappeared in a swirl of smoke. "Ha! Is that all you have? Pathet-"

Luna tackled her, sending them both off the cliff and into the canyon below. He knew she was expecting another magical attack, he was a mage after all, so the sudden physical attack took her completely by surprise.

Luna used his wings to befoul hers as they fell, preventing her from flipping them over. Nylinmir roared with anger and tried to scratch him, but he kicked her hard in her stomach and snapped his wings open, causing him to stop midair while she kept falling. With a tremendous splash, she landed in the river as he glided to the bank.

Nylinmir surfaced with another roar, more angry than the last. She scrambled to the bank as quick as she could, and shook herself off. Luna smiled to himself. All Ridgebacks hated water.

"You! You will regret that!" she hissed as she turned to Luna. A halo of jagged ice appeared around her head as more ice formed along the ground, shooting toward Luna.

Waiting for the last moment because he could, he jumped out of the way as the ice rose into piercing spears. One grazed his wingtip and more were sprouting around him. He took to the sky with a powerful leap, wings barely clearing the sharp points on the downswing.

Not to be deterred, Nylinmir took to the sky as well. Expecting more ice, Luna dropped his guard just enough that he was unable to dodge the streak of lightning that shot his way. All his muscles tensed and screamed with pain as the electricity arced all over him. He dropped out of the sky like a rock, directly toward the pillars of ice below.

With a flash of arcane energy, he destroyed the ice and landed heavily on all four feet. Pain bloomed on his shoulder as Nylinmir shot bolts of arcane power down at him. Half hit the ground around him, exploding on contact and sending up a cloud of dust and dirt, while the others peppered his back and wings.

With a mighty heave, Luna darted along the bank of the river, much faster than something his size had any right to be. The bombardment of arcane bolts continued, forcing Luna to dodge side to side as they pocked the ground around him. The heat from the magic was almost unbearable, and the sound of the explosions made it near impossible to determine Nylinmir's position. Luna knew arcane magic though, and knew it's limitations.

Feigning to the left, he turned right and dove into the river, diving as deep as it allowed. The arcane bolts hit the surface of the water harmlessly, and he knew that any electricity or ice she might send his way would disperse along the surface as well. The cold water was soothing to his wounds, the current drawing away blood and dirt from his body.

Luna didn't give Nylinmir much time to consider another form of attack. Almost as soon as he reached the bottom, he turned and launched himself out of the water, using his powers to counter her bolts of magic with his own. One of the bolts he wasn't able to counter hit him in the shoulder, but he didn't stop his forward momentum. Nylinmir was exactly where he thought she'd be, directly above him. It was obvious to him that she hadn't been in a serious fight in a long time since she was making such amateur mistakes.

Opening his mouth, Luna sent out a blast of pure arcane energy. Time and space warped around the blast as it sailed toward Nylinmir. She crossed her arms in front of her, allowing the blast to hit the bracers she wore. If she though that would stop the blast, she was sorely mistaken. With a thunderous crash, the magic sent Nylinmir flying backwards, tumbling through the sky as her shattered bracers fell to the ground below.

Not giving her any chance of recovering, Luna flew after her, concentrating his powers in his glowing purple claws. He sliced through the air in front of her, sending blades of energy toward her. Nylinmir recovered enough to snap a wing out to protect herself. Blood shot into the sky as the blades connected and sliced into her wing.

Luna didn't stop, he kept clawing the air and sending razor sharp blades of energy her way as he got closer and closer. Nylinmir could only raise her wings to protect herself, the blades slicing them to tatters. As Luna reached physical striking distance, she flung her wings open and roared. The sound itself seemed to shake the very world and with a sickening pop, Luna's eardrums ruptured.

It was enough pain for him to pause in his assault and Nylinmir took advantage of it. She surged forth and bit Luna on the shoulder she had hit with her arcane bolts. As they fell toward the earth below, ice spread across Luna's shoulder, freezing the muscles and making movement hard. He kicked out, scratching Nylinmir across the stomach, but that wasn't enough to stop her assault. They hit the ground hard, the impact being the only thing to dislodge Nylinmir from Luna's shoulder.

Luna jumped away from her, his leg and wing joint completely frozen. It didn't even hurt, it felt numb and the surrounding areas tingled, but he knew exactly how much damage she had done.

Nylinmir laughed, frost coiling from her mouth. "You're useless now. It wouldn't take much to shatter that arm you know. If you beg, I might be willing to spare your life."

Yeah right, those eyes held no mercy within them. She would suck him dry of his magic and leave him to waste away painfully. Or so she thought. Luna looked down at her shadow, which was growing, and smiled.

---

Why was the fool happy all of a sudden? Though she couldn't see his face, she could feel his energy go from tense to relaxed. There was no way he had something up his sleeve, she had frozen muscle and tendons in his shoulder solid, he couldn't fly, could barely run, there was no way he had some hidden power left.

"My name is Lunar Psion, and you, my dear, are about to discover the significance of that name," Luna said.

"I am no one's 'dear'." Nylinmir said, pulling her head back in disgust. She was about to say something else when she realized it was getting darker and she wasn't the cause of it. Luna raised his head and looked at the sun, and Nylinmir couldn't help but follow his gaze.

A solar eclipse.

It was entirely possible that their fighting had caused it, but no matter. Even if this Lunar Psion drew power from the moon, it wouldn't be enough to surpass her.

As the world grew darker and darker, Luna started laughing. He raised into the air, the darkening sun like a halo around his head. Steam raised off of him as somehow, through some miracle, the ice she had inflicted him with started to defrost. It wasn't only the ice, the rest of his wounds seemed to be healing as well. Unfair.

Nylinmir drew on her power and shot electricity toward him, but as if there were a barrier in the way, it ricocheted off to dissipate into the air. The fool only laughed harder, still raising into the air. She would take off after him, but her wings were in tatters and she didn't feel like hurting more than she had to.

Taking a deep breath, she shot a bolt of energy from her mouth at him. This one found it's mark, but instead of slinging him, it merely exploded on him, causing him to cease his annoying laughter. He swept his wing out, scattering the smoke from the blast.

"Is that all you have?" he asked, his eyes glowing with the power from the moon.

"You wish," Nylinmir muttered under her breath. She concentrated deeply, knowing he was about to make his move, and she would be ready for him.

The world was plunged into darkness as the moon completely covered the sun, and that's when he struck. He divebombed toward her, eyes a streak in the dark. Nylinmir released her power at the moment he did and the world exploded in chaos.

Lighting, both natural and of a different world, flashed and arched across the sky. A howling started from somewhere and grew in pitch until it was barely audible, more of an unsettling feeling than a noise. It seemed as if time stopped, the river ceasing it's flow and the only movement being from their magic. Space was affected too, warping in odd ways. Little portal popped up here and there, glowing eyes of beings unseen peering out.

The two of them stood frozen, neither one's power able to find purchase against the others. Where the magic collided was an intensely bright point of fire and lightning. Luna hovered above Nylinmir, his face awash in cruel excitement. Her own face most likely mirrored his. It had been a very, very long time since someone had pushed her this hard.

Slowly, so slowly it was nearly imperceptible, the point of magic between them started moving toward Nylinmir. She couldn't believe it. Her, losing? Her muscles screamed at her as she pushed them harder, pouring out all the magic she had stored. It wasn't helping, if anything she was only prolonging the inevitable conclusion of this conflict.

She couldn't dodge, couldn't move out of the way without leaving herself exposed to the blast. All she could do was take it head on. With a roar, both from the magic and from her, it hit.

Her world turned white, the ringing in her ears louder than any noise she'd ever heard before. If she thought her muscles were screaming before, that was nothing compared to now. An eternity passed, or maybe it was a few seconds, she couldn't tell.

The world faded back in slowly, the edges of her vision staying white and the ringing in her ears slowly lessening. Luna was standing a distance away, breathing heavily and trembling. He seemed shocked to see her still alive, and that more than anything spurred her to stand despite her battered body.

Standing wasn't graceful, she stumbled more than once and her legs didn't want to support her weight, but she managed it. It took everything she had to stay like that and raise her head up to look Luna in the eyes. She would not die by a mortal's hands.

The sunlight was growing, and with it Luna's powers were leaving him. She would have her revenge for the pain he put her through. She would drain every drop of magic from his body.

As she got ready to attack again, something moved in her periphery. She turned to look, but nothing was there. Luna had seen it too if his head movement was anything to go by. She turned her attention back to the pest in front of her, chalking it up to exhaustion, but it moved again.

This time she tried focusing on it, and whatever it was did something that nothing else had ever done before. It scared her.

The shape stayed in her peripheral, not quite there but dangerous all the same. They had attracted something with their clash. Something ancient. Something that words could not describe. The effects on time and space still lingered, the small portals threatening to tear into bigger ones, threatening to let loose the creatures within. If they continued to fight, there was no telling what would come for them.

Swallowing hard, she focused back on Luna. "You have not won this."

He studied her for a moment before speaking. "Neither have you."

With a nod from both of them, they turned and walked in different directions, away from the distorted area and away from whatever they had summoned.

She would live to fight another day, and if she ever met Luna again, she would kill him without magic.
