Alternatively--Haleakalaa might just be an old dragon who seems normal apart from the fact that whenever she sets herself on fire, a new hatchling regenerates from the ashes, and she has achieved immortality.

The image of how a specific tribe of dragons in Ashfall see the Flamecaller as a bright orange feathered and slender more akin to a crane than a dragon, rather than a scaled coal black reptilian creature. She is described as 'constantly burning with the power of a million suns,' and revered as a spirit of regeneration, renewal, and the cycle of creation and destruction.

Kekepani is part of a sacred line of 'phoenix dragons' that the Flamecaller created to ensure that even if the land of Fire is decimated and all other dragons of Fire are killed, that the spiritual essence of Her element may never die. A new 'phoenix dragon' to carry the essence of Fire is chosen by Flamecaller on an irregular schedule. When a former phoenix dragon is ready to pass on their role, they set up a pyre of cinnamon and myrrh, burning themselves alive, and their essence is transferred to another. Sometimes, the spirit of Fire wanders around the Ashfall for millenniums, leaving the Fire flight lost, unstable, and vulnerable to being destroyed by other flights or the Shade.
