"Hark ye, old fellow, why, in striving to pry into what is in heaven, do you not manage to see what is on earth."

He weighed them in both claws, summing up the worth of a season with the weight of their smooth skin on his scales. In the dip of a mossy path he perched upright, outside the small carved hill and the uneven rows of weeping trees. Small and unkept, but flourishing amidst the remaining autumn rainbow of color, they mirrored splendidly from his pearl, which sat nestled between the spines of his antlers.

The wisp of his breath circled around the entryway under the hill, where a tundra appeared made of old rags and sagging fur. She lied in the doorway, legs crossed and dozing, but now raised her head as his shoulders sagged with tension. He lowered them - one bright and striking, the other subdued and brindled. It wasn't an easy choice.

"You're not going to like it," he said. Shiva lowered her neck and stretched as if she wasn't listening. He placed the fruit delicately between the moss, and stepped down to meet her.

"Tell me," she said, once he stood over her, "Are they being difficult?"

He paused and held his tongue, unsure if she referred to the fruit or the Keepers she shared council with. It was better to avoid formalities and proclaim truth, he decided.

Shiva shook her head when he explained. "Ah," she rattled, a deep, pulsing tic in her throat.

"I must use them, you understand," he continued, "I believe others have ingested their own...labors, with no casualty." He felt one of his whiskers twitch.

"Yes, of course. That is personal preference here," she sighed.

"Good, then - "

"And what of your tree?"

He straightened up, "My...?"

"Is that bright one not from yours? We take consent very seriously." Shiva stared past him. Where they sat atop the moss.
