How would you feel if your entire clan died? If you were the only one that was left, and it was all because someone gave their life to hide you? Would the spirits of those you lost haunt you? Oswin was just a hatchling when the war happened. She doesn't remember much, just the sounds and smells of bloodshed and fire. Right before the beasts tore through her home, her mother placed her in a hollow tree trunk, and hid her bright scales under it's fallen leaves. This small act ended up saving Oswin's life, but at what cost? By the time silence had fallen, and she felt like she could emerge from her hiding place, there was nothing left of the life she knew. Oswin can't remember how long she sat there, but knows it was a quite some time. She was just a hatchling, looking out onto the wreckage of her home without any knowledge of what to do next. Thankfully, her clan had sent a letter to the neighboring clan across the river. They were supposed to be there for the battle, but flooding had caused their path to be blocked. By the time they all arrived, it was just her left. They took her in, of course. They gave her food, warmth, and a listening ear. But they didn't take the pain away. They couldn't. By day, Oswin could smile and laugh, and pretend like nothing was wrong. However, her nights were filled with torturous memories, and the voices of her lost clan mates. In her nightmares, they all hated her. They were angry that she alone had survived, and accused her of betrayal. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't speak up against them. Her voice was lost, and so was all her confidence. Once old enough Oswin left her adopted clan and explored the world in search of a place she could find peace. She tried her best to push the thoughts away and start over with a new home, but nothing worked. When she would forget about the past for a few days guilt would would quickly overwhelm her and the voices would flood back stronger than ever. It wasn't until she found the Wayfinders, and more importantly Carter, that things got better. He had approached her with his strange gift on the very first day and it changed her life forever. "They're happy for you, you know." He said it so matter of factly, as if it was obvious, in his calm almost distant voice. Even though she sometimes feels like he's lying about it, she relies on those words more than she could ever admit.
