They told him he was spotless. They told him he was “The One.” The one who would lead them. The one who would save them. The one who would cleanse the world of its filth.
Why, they did not tell him. How, they did not know.
He was born into a desolate land. All forms of life seemed to struggle here. None could make it far. They called it a curse, and it had befallen the land for as long as anyone could remember.
They told him he was a miracle hatchling. That they sky cracked open one day, and through the thick grey clouds that loomed perpetually over the land, a ray of sunlight shot down on the ground, and at the end of that ray lay a strange purple egg. They told him he was a miracle hatchling. A gift from the Heavens that had long forsaken the land.
He was raised by countless dragons, none surviving long enough to see him through. He alone was immune of the curse that continued to snatch away the others. Death and Goodbyes he knew well. Loneliness and Despair his friends. They told him he was “The One.” They told him he was a miracle hatchling. They told him he would lead them. Would save them. Would cleanse the world of its filth. They believed in him with feverish piety.
Until one day, he snapped. As he watched his latest guardian swallow her last breath, an overwhelming sense of fear engulfed him. He spread his giant crystalline wings and soared from the temple they had built for him. A prison he had never once left since birth.
They told him he was spotless. Indeed he was. He glowed and seem to cast light on the despairing land. As he soured higher and higher through the thick, grey clouds, he felt an invisible barrier push against his snout. There was naught but faint stars around him now.
They told him he was “The One.” They told him he was a miracle hatchling. So he pushed with all his might, and suddenly he was free. The sky cracked and shattered before his eyes, and the invisible barrier, a thin film of stars seared onto his body. Screaming and writhing in pain, he turned back toward the land he was escaping, the only place he knew, the only place he could call home.
They were all there. Watching, weeping. Sunlight streamed through the opening he had created. It spilt over the rotting trees and murky swamps. It spilt over the mourning dragons.
Sunlight was hope. Hope they had long lost.
Sunlight was pain. Piercing, searing, pain.
He did nothing. He could do nothing. He watched them stretch out their wings, reaching out to the brightness, burnt eyes transfixed on the sunlight spilling from behind him. He watched them smoke up, their feverish yelps of delight turning into horrendous screams of pain as they crumbled to dust in the land beneath him.
They said he was “The One.” They said he would lead them. Would save them. Would cleanse the world of its filth.
And he had.

She was just like him. Spotless. Lost. Seeking.
He stared across the snow field at his doppleganger, so still one could easily pass him by without notice. He knew she couldn't see him so well. He waited patiently. He saw her glance left and right. He could sense her worry. He knew there was no one here but them.
"S-Sir,” he heard her call out tentatively, her voice soft and crisp like the falling snow around them. “Are you a dragon, Sir?”
He caught sight of her faint pink eyes, the only indicator that she was, in fact, real and not some figment of his imagination. She seemed shaken. As she should be.
A dragon. Was he a dragon? He no longer knew.
They told him he was spotless. They told him he was “The One.” The one who would lead them. The one who would save them. The one who would cleanse the world of its filth.
“... I am nothing but a shadow.”
