Philip

Philip was born in the Abiding Boneyard. His parents subscribed to one of the more fanatical variations of the plague philosophy, and so left him to fend for himself when he was barely more than a hatchling. Philip learned to survive, but grew to hate the wasteland that reminded him of his parents' cruelty. He wandered gradually east, passing through the Tangled Wood, but didn't feel at home until he saw the bright sun shining through the trees at the border with the Sunbeam Ruins. During his travels Philip had learned physical combat, and he found a natural fit in his new job as soldier for Dysiliou. Philip's vigilance and strategic thinking allowed him to choose his assignments and climb through the ranks, and soon he was captain of the guard at the palace.
As captain of the guard, one of Philip's greatest strengths was his coolheadedness. Although he cared deeply about his kingdom, his royal charges, and the guards he commanded, he was able to keep his cool when an emergency arose. When he fell in love with Cassiopeia, the princess of his kingdom, suppressing his emotions in that regard seemed to him the rational path forward, but it soon began to take its toll. Usually after a fight was over Philip let go and gave himself permission to feel all of the worry and sadness he had suppressed in the heat of the moment, but this new fight was never over. Finally, it became too much, and he went to Cassiopeia, who had by now become queen, and asked that he be transferred to a job at the kingdom border. When pressed, he admitted the reason for his request, only to discover that Cassiopeia felt the same way. After courting for a few months, they married. Philip becoming the prince regent, continuing most of his old duties with the addition of a few new diplomatic ones.
Philip and Cassiopeia have been happily married for years, and have several children. Philip admires Cassiopeia's fierce devotion to her kingdom, which he sees reflected in her passionate, eloquent speeches. Reserved Philip finds the royal court daunting, but Cassiopeia helps him navigate the complex social settings.
After spending his adolescence hungry and surrounded by decay, Philip has a strong appreciation for good food and beautiful things. He can be indulgent when it comes to his diet and wardrobe when he's not in the middle of a military mission.
Philip's familiar is Felix, a smoky bantam fangar who is always by his side. Over the years Philip has learned to trust Felix's intuition: when the fangar seems unsettled, danger is usually near.
