Crandal's biological mother was a member of the Hungry Ones subspecies, and Crandal himself qualifies coulouration-wise as a member. He was saved and delivered to a group of hunters somewhere deep in the Fortress of Ends, and he does not remember much of the world before he was taken in by Home (he was accepted with a bit of reluctance, admittedly - who knows what the son of a Hungry One will be like?). Crandal's new family attempted to shelter him from the knowledge of his subspecies, but as he is a studious young dragon who loves nothing more than spending time with a few encyclopedias, he was bound to find out eventually. Though his early life was marked with a great deal of anxiety, as he grew and it became very clear he was not going to wake up a Hungry One one day, Crandal took to life at Home with a fervor, quickly becoming indispensable.

From what Crandal has read, whether or not a hatchling of a Hungry One inherits its parent's mindless savagery seems to be no more than simple luck of the draw, and he cannot find conclusive evidence on whether or not hatchlings must exhibit these traits immediately after birth. Nothing terrifies him more. A naturally mild-mannered, rather timid dragon, Crandal can't shake the fear he will one day wake up a monster. He keeps a close eye on himself at all times, and spent countless days extremely worried about his large appetite (normal for a growing Imperial) and how cold he often seems to be (normal for many Ice dragons). He goes out of his way to be as unassuming as possible, but is still very conscious of the wary looks he gets while out in public. He is fiercely protective of his younger brother Kelvar, and can often be found worrying on his brother's behalf. Now one of the oldest residents and a well-respected leader around Home, Crandal is the assistant Head of Niflheimr Hall and devoted to maintaining working order. His quiet and mild-mannered personality can mean new residents think he's a bit of a pushover, but he's also a stickler for the rules and has no patience for dragons trying to bend rules or cause trouble, making Niflheimr one of the most orderly Halls.
