My first memory is of the face of Delta, a witch of lightning and my dearest companion. Of my own history, I know little. I am a traveler from a land so remote that no wings can hope to carry one there, but now and then, I return. I drift from dream to dream. In a distant ruined city, awash in midnight moonglow, the hum of electricity resonates within crystal spires and within me. Each dim star above us lends its own whisper before the sky swells with sound and collapses to the boundless sea below. The water teems with voices now, with life and with secrets, and as a luminous swarm we descend upon the mute abyss. Sound drowns out silence, light drives out darkness; we are complete, we incandesce, we dissipate. The crashing waves above sing of blessed thunder and I wake, trembling. Perhaps it is because I am not like the others that these visions come to me. Even the markings on this body tell a tale of a land of moonlight and storm. Delta says I was whisked away from that world of dreams, and I suspect my soul— if one might call it that— is bound to never leave it. Yet despite my constant return, I can never truly dwell in that nameless land of crystal. My corporeal nature prohibits it; this body cannot follow me into those starlit ruins. The kind folk of Refuge, the wanderers, exiles, and displaced souls, believe they understand my despair, and their words of sympathy comfort me when I long for sleep. But even exiles can return to their homeland in theory. Such a thing is beyond hope for me, and to try, I feel, is to grasp at moonbeams. Thus in my waking moments I do all I can to permit myself to dream a little longer. I offer assistance to Refuge when I am able, but the nature of my visions forbids me from much. I already am intimately familiar with the glyphs of my own world, but they are, regretfully, incomprehensible to anyone else. Delta has gotten me a scribe who can teach me how to write in Draconian, so that one day I may be of some use. Meanwhile, I help care for the hatchlings. Delta says they love the tales I tell them of my homeland. I cannot help but sense their longing to glide among the crystal spires and plunge down into the glittering sea. It is but a small fraction of the incurable yearning I feel.
