• Sentient magic
xxxTheme song: none yet
Battle theme: none yet
Aren’t you just magical, she coos, to the delicate fronds of fern that wave gently in the wind and curl lovingly around her claws. Of course you are, she smiles. I am your mother, after all. The ferns reach up her wrists in response, longing for more of her touch, but she chastises them softly, and they shrink back into their rich forest bed. How much the earth gives to her, she thinks, with deep satisfaction. How much it yields to her, even if its master does not bid it to do so. Life may not be as ancient as the earth itself, but it knows better than any other how to fight for its existence with what little allowance the earth provides. Her children have done well.
Next she tends to the creeping vines, the ivies, the sumacs, all those that crawl quietly along whatever surface that they may until it is time for them to shine. Hello, little ones, she calls, and they give a sort of shiver in response, a slight reaching upwards, towards her voice, towards the sun. Her children have found the ways to strip every nutrient they can from the earth, she thinks proudly, as she observes the way the vines’ roots curl into the dirt. They return what they take in due time, of course, but the one of the earth will hear nothing of that. Pity.
Finally she comes to some of her proudest creations, bright beautiful things that open and close their jaws in excitement at her arrival. The venus flytraps, her dearest darling ones. Then they shrink back, and she knows in an instant that someone else has arrived. Pity, she calls over her shoulder, that you came just at the end. Everyone else will be quite cross that they missed you, you know. She turns, and the earth child stands before her, frozen in shock. Yes, she continues. I knew. The venus flytraps lean forward and snap their jaws, but she soothes them. We must have peace, she says. Then she narrows her eyes. For now.
