He wakes in darkness. In these first moments his instincts cry out for him to writhe, to thrash, to tear the very fabric of this universe to tattered shreds, contort and twist so that the world will never be the same again. For a time, the sound of his arrival is like thunder, an indication of the calamity to come. He razes each and every creature that crosses his scarlet stained path, and for a time, he is content. Then lightning cracks, and breaks the sky, and he is confronted like an entity not unlike himself, except it is far more ancient, and a thousand times more wise. Its maw opens, a creaking smear of shadow and blood, and for the first time, another being looks him in the eyes and laughs.

It, like him, is a curse. It thrives when the world trembles with fear, when mountains move and the land quakes beneath the shiver of its breath. But it teaches him that there is more to this life than fear, more to their existence than pure pain, exquisite suffering, perfect havoc. It teaches him, for the first time, that he is capable of doing something good. This, and this alone, is the greatest lesson he will ever learn. That he need not blindly follow this path of destruction. That he can do what is right.

There are rules. There are rules because there have to be rules, lest he lose sight of himself once again. He, in his mockery of an infant form, descends upon the land to test the character of those that long to be parents. Never lonesome, longing souls, no, he wishes to determine the mettle of those who might some day bring forth new life into this land. The final rule he follows is that they must care for him for three moons, watching the luminous shape wax and wane in the sky, and they must never discover that he is but a test. If they uncover to him the purest of souls and the warmest of hearts, he leaves them with well wishes, and a blessing for their eventual child. But if they are not fit to be parents in any way, they uncover his full fury, the depth of his true wrath. At that point there is no question of whether he should be merciful.

He returns to his true form only when they deserve it.
