Life in the Shifting Wastelands is hard enough, what with the backbreaking work, the bone-dry desert, and the things that lurk in the dunes, hungry for fresh blood. It's hardly a safe place to live and work, but still the dragons that live there plow onward, dedicated to their craft. They even toil close to the heart of the storms, laboring away with lightning licking down their spines.
Abrecan cannot count how many times he has seen lightning strike. He cannot count how many times he has seen his fellows fall for the last time.
For a long time, he could not look as the scorched bodies were taken away. They were not only proof that the storms could turn on everyone below in an instant, but they were often his friends, his family. They were a part of his life and he lost them.
But then he was struck. And then he was struck again, because lightning can strike the same place twice. It was the most stunning experience of his life, and somehow, he survived without a scratch, veins glowing with energy.
Since then, he's done his best to draw the wrath of the storm. Lightning calls to him, and he to it, which has spared the dragons of the Shifting Expanse a great deal of grief wherever he goes. It's the least he can do, preventing more deaths. Maybe one day his luck will run out, and the lightning will be too much, but now that there are no dead to carry away, Abrecan is finally more at peace than ever before.
