Silence. A comfortable silence filled the old temple as night fell. Shatter stood at the entrance of the temple, yawning every once in a while. She sat next to a good friend and fellow guard, who chuckled at her tiredness.
"You'd think they'd at least shorten the shifts by a few hours. These twelve-hour shifts are so boring, don't you think?" the brown skydancer said, looking over at her friend.
"Hm, I think they don't have enough guards to do that, to be honest, Shatter." her friend muttered, her gaze fixed on the line of trees in front of them.
"You take this too seriously. as if anyone's gonna try and enter some old temple." Shatter chuckled as she twisted a small iridescent rock in her paws.
"Or, maybe you should try and take this more seriously. Honestly, Shatter, this is our job." the other dragon's voice said sharply. Shatter went to retort, but sound of footsteps made her freeze. The look on her friend's face seemed to ask
'You heard that too, right?'
A light green skydancer approached the temple, grinning down at the two dragons. Shatter was the first to assume a defensive position.
"Who the hell are you?" she yelled, baring her teeth at the stranger, who simply smiled wider. Shatter barely had time to react before a green flash hit her and she fell to the ground. The last thing she saw before losing consciousness was her friend hurrying towards her and the stranger vanishing into the temple.
When she awoke again something she knew she had failed her task. The evil artifact had fallen into the paws of another dragon. She felt exhausted and groaned as she stood up.
"You should rest a bit longer, Shatter." The voice of her friend said from next to her bed. Shatter shook her head.
"No, we need to get the artifact back." Shatter said quietly as she got up. Her muscles protested, but she pushed herself up and made her way out of her room.
"Shatter, come on. You're still hurt. I know you want to get the artifact back as soon as possible, but your health is important too!" her friend pleaded.
"It's my fault for not being careful, so I will get the artifact back. I am fine." Shatter said as she walked on, a determined look on her face.
