► Memories

Perhaps the reason for her dark nature was that she had never been loved.
Love is a simple thing, yet of utmost importance when the time comes. For when a dragon is brought up in the dark and lonely absence of a family who cared, it is unlikely that they will ever learn to reach the light.
Leviathan is clever. She knows of her predicament, and accepts it graciously. A thing to be admired, you would say, and yet it is not. Any dragon who has heard of the eery fortune teller will know that she accepts her fate not because she is honourable, but because Leviathan takes pride in the twisted darkness of her lonely mind.
Cold winds stir in her wake, and at these she smiles, black pupils bright behind the tiny hollowed out sockets of her mask. The day is new and golden, but the air around her seems still and filled with shadows. Leviathan spreads her wings and takes off, inky shade spilling from her feathers as she soars over the barren rocky terrain. She is searching, her slitted gaze scanning the ground for the figure.
A silhouette appears on the horizon, and Leviathan glides silently, landing with an eerie clack of her long claws against the stone. He whirls around, fear spearing his pupils as he spots her - an ominous feathered figure standing just behind him, watching his reaction with amusement.
"Greetings, fae. Your fate has been decided."

It had been dark, just as always. The flutter of tiny, pale wings, and the glow of pink eyes. An arcane fae, faint lime green scales rippling as he flew. Leviathan followed.
Slowly the faded surroundings became clearer, and the coatl strained her striking blue eyes to see where the fae was headed. He darted through a dusty marketplace, and the vision dragged Leviathan after him. Past a lantern seller and a laughing huddle of hatchlings, past a rowdy group of tundras, past a gentle tinkling windchime shop, until at last the fae arrived at the gaping mouth of a mine tunnel, the stone around it speckled with chunks of crystal. Taking a helmet from a small crate of mining gear that rested at the edge of the opening, the fae took a deep gulp of breath.
'I'm going to prove to them. I can be strong too...'
Leviathan's heart thudded painfully against her chest as the realisation hit her. She'd had enough experience to know that snarling out a warning wouldn't help - that it was only a vision, and the only way to help him was to find him when the vision was over, and change his path before it was too late.
In vain, she tried to tear herself from the vision, but it was too strong, and she was pulled down the mines after him. Darkness, the only light bouncing off the fractured crystals. They were only halfway down the tunnel when the rain began outside, light at first then heavy. Yet the fae kept going, oblivious of the danger. By the time the rocks fell and the caverns were filled with water, it was too late.

"Who are you? Oh, but of course. I've heard of you - the fake fortune teller. You won't be tricking me that easily! You really must be mad if you think I'd listen to your lies."
Throughout his speech, Leviathan's gaze remained calm and controlled, with only a flicker of doubt as to whether she really should warn the impudent young fae of his approaching doom.
"I really think you out to listen to me. You see, you're headed to the mines, aren't you?"
It was a risk, but a risk she had to take. Leviathan had no idea whether he was planning to prove his strength by bringing back a crystal from the mines yet, or if that was an idea that came later on. Why, she could even be the one that inspired the idea. But she had to do something, and correctly predicting his future was the only way she could make him listen.
The spark of fear in his eyes sent a shudder of relief through hers.
"How do you know..."
"It was shown to me in a vision." she snapped, head raised high in a superior manner, "and in that same vision, I saw the rain come, the stone fall, and the tunnels flood. Perhaps you do believe that a dragon as dark as me could hold such power as the truth... But you must believe, for if you do not heed my word, the vision will come. They always do. And you will perish."
He stared at her, green wings folded tightly by his side. The fae looked small against the barren earth, quivering with fear. He blinked, the earlier denial gone.
Leviathan was satisfied. Perhaps she was not so dark after all, for though she was only happy when the fear filled their eyes, that was also the moment they believed, and they were saved.
Then again, as she took off into the bleary sky, leaving the fae to choose his fate, the ice of her heart was still cruel as ever, and she did not care if he heeded her warning or not. Her job had been fulfilled, and that was the only purpose. Slowly, after every vision brings her as a saviour so close to the light, she falls again into darkness.
