Happy Halloween 2019
There was a man sobbing on the floor of an old shrine. He cried over the loss of his family to the plague, a terrible illness that claimed half the world over a century before. Plagues were among the hardest creatures to kill, they never seemed capable of it. Humans died easily however and so riddled with grief over it they sought any dark magic they could find to stop it. They should accept their mortality. There are worse things to lose. The man accepted his fate, in exchange for his soul, the creature returned his family to him. Their souls had also been sold.
The creature was considered a God in the old days, going by many names. Man got on the good graces of this creature, bringing sacrifices and offering up their very soul for trivial things. Eventually through the passage of time this creature was considered more of a monster and none more were sacrificed. Man feared monsters, any temple created for the monster was burned. That was aside from one small, forgotten shrine deep in the mountains. Now only brave souls with nothing left venture to this shrine to beg for miracles.
Whatever man craved and received were not miracles. The creature of shadows granted twisted dreams and corrupted all those that sought refuge from pain. Men became kings through the creatures power but kings fall and the bells will toll and the steep price will be paid. This man was given his family but it didn't take long for the man himself to grow ill with the rest of his village. His family will soon be left to fend completely for themselves and will succumb to the famine that accompanies plagues like this.
Curiously a soft voice broke through the dark clouds that surrounded the creature as it slept. The voice of a woman pleaded for help, the creature could hear the fear and desperation in her tone. Peaking through to the mortal world the creature watched as men approached the shrine with their torches. Torches were thrown into the shrine as the old wood caught fire quickly. The men could be heard grumbling and shouting about a witch, closing the doors of the shrine, leaving the woman to her smoldering fate. It had been many years since man had set foot in the shrine. This lack of regard would not go unpunished.
The fires spread quickly, engulfing the entire shrine as the wood groaned and cracked. The woman could only sob as the flames blocked any chance of escape. The look on the mens faces went from jubilance to confusion as the fire slowed and suddenly grew dark. The embers that shot into the sky were no longer vivid and red, they were black and the smoke became even more dense. It appeared alive as the fire reached out and grabbed each of the men, burning them almost immediately. Their screams didn't last longer than a few seconds each. The last of the men stared at his own inevitable demise as a creature stepped from the black flames.
The eyes glowed brightly but the creature itself was coated in a thick black goo that dripped slowly. It's form was not completely distinguishable as it continued to change shape and mold into what seemed like a massive creature with long claws. From the black goo emerged bones that almost formed a skeleton, outlining the creatures horrifying shape. The man screamed at the sight, for now he has seen a true monster. The creature took only a single step forward and the grass around its claws immediately withered and died. Deep ticking sounds could be heard from the bird like skull at its head and the man was unable to make another sound before becoming engulfed in darkness.
As quickly as it came the flames brightened back to its original orange coloring, quickly growing dimmer and eventually dying as the only remaining part of the shrine was in a perfect circle around the girl who had witnessed the entire thing in shock. Mortified and exhausted by the ordeal she had not even noticed the large mark left on her hand. She had been granted safety, but at what cost?
