Biography

Riven let out a low growl of annoyance. In theory, everything should fit together and work perfectly, but in reality, the inventor just couldn't seem to get his newest creation to work properly. The well-oiled gears fit together perfectly and moved in a hypnotic and soundless way, and every part was exactly the right size, nothing too big or too small. Power wasn't an issue, as the power plant Riven had invented some time ago worked better than expected, converting the heat from the Ashfall Waste into a surplus of energy and electricity.

The Pearlcatcher let out a sigh. Though everything should operate properly, it simply refused to work. Riven twisted his neck around to look at his left hind-leg. His left wing was drooped over it, limp and useless, just like his leg laying unmoving against the ground, both limbs permanently paralyzed due to an unfortunate accident when Riven was very young. He didn't remember the incident taking place, but he had heard the stories more than enough times. Riven had been kidnapped by a group of Serthis and tested on. If his parents hadn't found him, he most likely would have sustained a lot more than just a paralyzed leg. He didn't like thinking about it.

If only Riven could figure out what he was doing wrong... He tried looking at it from different perspectives and asking the other dragons in his clan, however none of the others were very good at things like this. In fact, it was actually quite strange for Riven to have picked up this profession, as he wasn't a Lightning dragon, didn't live in a Lightning clan, and had never actually met a real inventor in his life. Everything he knew about technology came from trial and error. All of his earlier success had been seemingly a fluke, but as he analyzed both his successes and his failures, Riven became better and better at creating things that worked the FIRST time he tried it.

But no matter how many prototypes he created, no matter how many days he spent attempting to make some sort of progress, and no matter how perfect his designs seemed to be, Riven could not create anything to reanimate his paralyzed limbs. The inventor felt a small bubble of panic rise up in him as he thought about every second that passed without making any progress. Though getting through life with a limp leg and wing was challenging, it wasn't impossible. However, trying to get through life with an entirely paralyzed body was basically impossible... And with every passing moment, the permanent paralysis slowly crept through him. What had once been just a paralyzed leg had spread to his wing, and it had already started numbing his tail and left arm. The Pearlcatcher was running out of time. If he didn't make a breakthrough soon, Riven knew he was as good as dead. If the paralysis reached his heart before he could figure things out...

The clock hanging on the wall ticked Riven's life away. Every passing moment felt like an eternity of fear and doubt crushing his hope. He felt the silence drowning him in nothingness, reminding him of the numbness he felt, or rather, didn't feel.

Riven was shaken from his daze by someone saying his name. His mother, Izara, had brought him something to eat. She expressed her worry for her son, and tried to convince him to take a break from his work. He refused. Though he had been in here for days with little sleep, and hardly anything to eat, he still refused to stop. He refused to waste time with things like eating or sleeping. If he couldn't finish his work, he would be dead anyways, so those things didn't matter to him. His mother left. She had tried convincing him before, to no avail, and already knew arguing would get her nowhere.

Picking up a blue gear, Riven turned it over in his talons, feeling the ridges along its sides. The answer seemed so close, and yet it stayed tantalizingly out of reach. He fumbled with the gear, trying to get a better hold on it as it slipped from his talons, but the slight numbness invading his talons allowed the part to fall and clatter to the ground. It was too late. He could barely keep his talons steady anymore. He was destined to descend into the numb darkness without a second chance.

Riven allowed his eyelids to slide shut for the first time in days... or was it weeks? He succumbed to the exhaustion in defeat. He hadn't even touched the food his mother had brought him. The clock's ticking faded away as Riven slipped into unconsciousness.

Riven was surrounded by darkness. It held him in a surprisingly warm embrace, unlike the cold numbness he was used to feeling. He soon realized it wasn't completely dark, as there seemed to be a faint glow radiating from the walls around him. Lights suddenly flickered on, and Riven found himself standing in the Heat Power Plant he had designed. He limped slowly through the building, his paralyzed limbs dragging uselessly at his side. He came to a stop as he watched the mechanisms of the Power Plant converted the heat radiated throughout the Ashfall Waste into energy, which powered not only the rest of the building, but the rest of the clan as well.

As he stared at the working parts, Riven began to notice that the setup looked different that he remembered. He moved closer for a better look at things, when the lights suddenly went out. The darkness only lasted a few moments though, as bright arcs of electricity pierced the inky blackness that had surrounded Riven. The lightning illuminated the inside of the Power Plant, and things started to fall apart. The electricity was ripping through the different parts of the mechanisms, pulling them together with some strange force that seemed to come from nowhere.

Riven's ears twitched as he thought her heard something behind him, but when he turned around, he was greeted only by shadows. It seemed to whisper to him, repeating something over and over again.

...Electromagnetism...

Another arc of lightning briefly illuminated the room, revealing something hiding in the darkness. Riven felt shock and fear race through him. The being before him radiated power, and towered over the Pearlcatcher. However the light was gone as soon as it had appeared, and everything was once again hidden by the inky blackness.

The Pearlcatcher awoke to the sound of his heart pounding in his ears. He sat up quickly, almost falling over from the imbalance of his limp wing, but managed to stay upright. He glanced at the clock, finding that he had been sleeping for about an hour... Or perhaps 13, though it just as easily could have been 25 hours. It was only a 12 hour clock that didn't specify AM or PM.

His strange dream was nearly forgotten, but one thing stayed strong in his mind: the force of electromagnetism pulling everything together. To Riven, it seemed far-fetched, but at this point, the inventor was willing to try almost anything. And to his surprise, he found he was able to use electricity to hold parts together. It was like a whole new array of possibilities had opened for Riven, and suddenly he felt hope blooming in his chest. Maybe he COULD be saved...

Countless hours of work was poured into Riven's new idea. He created plans, then prototypes, until finally, his hard work started to show signs of real progress. He created sleek silver gauntlets that covered his arms, with the parts held together through the power of electricity. Though it was only a prototype, and he still had a lot more to cover if he wanted to survive.

Riven didn't stop. Days passed, but he still worked without pause. He was fueled by adrenaline and inspiration. His invention almost seemed to create itself. It was almost as if Riven was on autopilot, being influenced by something else. His talons, though partially numb, moved expertly, never fumbling or misplacing anything. Parts were scattered all across his work table, but he knew where everything was.

Then... It was finished.

For the first time in days, Riven stopped. His tail was limp, and his right wing was sagging. The Pearlcatcher took a deep breath, preparing himself for the next step in his plan. The parts were all created, and now, it was just a matter of assembling everything.

Riven set up mirrors around himself, making sure he could see exactly what he was doing. He knew this was the riskiest part of his plan, but he also knew he would die anyways if he didn't go through with it...

Riven opened his eyes, slowly blinking and trying to get his bearings. He felt strange and slightly groggy. He instinctively pushed himself up, trying to stand.

And he could.

Riven's breath caught in his throat. He quickly looked himself over, opening his wings, and stretched his legs. Electric blue gears and sprockets were visible along Riven's sides, and he could feel the mechanisms connected to them turning inside of him. His heartbeat felt different. It pulsed with electricity, rushing the energy through his veins and through the gears that interlocked through him. The polished version of the silver gauntlets he had created as a prototype were now complete with large mantis-like claws, seemingly inspired by the Stormcatcher, however at this time, Riven barely knew anything about the Lightning Deity. Instead, it had been inspired by his dream...

Electricity sparked and jumped from the silver stormclaws, holding everything together with the power of electromagnetic energy. With his previously useless limbs replaced with fine-fitted gears and mechanisms, Riven was able to move to his full extent for the first time since being kidnapped by the Serthis.

Riven took a deep breath, feeling the warm air fill his lungs. The contraptions within him converted the heat into more energy, just like his Power Plant. He had never felt so alive! Riven tentatively tested out his legs, moving his weight around slowly to test his work. Everything held up beautifully, and soon, Riven was walking around. He made his way outside, finding it dark and quiet.

Riven spread his wings slowly, his tempered heart starting to beat quicker. Riven had never flown before. Before he had been taken, he was too young to fly, and by the time he was old enough, his wing was paralyzed. But now...

Riven leapt into the air, flapping his wings as hard as he could. Electricity arced and danced around him as he did, and he could feel the power rushing through his body. As he gained height, the Pearlcatcher slowed his flapping until he didn't flap at all, allowing himself to glide high above the Ashfall Waste.

With a small smile, the inventor looked up at the stars stretching above him. He silently thanked Stormcatcher, knowing that the power of electricity had saved his life. Riven was no longer purely a dragon. He was part creation.

And he was finally free.
