Rankomae shook violently, his mind and body entirely focused on only one thing: cold. It was as if a thousand knives were stabbing him simultaneously all over his body, and Rankomae felt another tear begin to form in the corner of his eye before it turned to solid ice a split second later. Tucking his crimson wings in tighter to his shaking frame, Rankomae lifted his head and took in the desolate tundra around him, utterly hopeless. The realization hit him like a wall of ice (which was ironic, given he was surrounded by an endless sea of the stuff): He was alone—and he was going to die.

Rankomae lowered his head, tucking it under a wing and wishing that wing were made of fire as its color suggested. He’d only ever seen fire once in his short life, but Rankomae had become instantly convinced that it was the most beautiful thing he would ever see, no matter how long he lived. In this moment, surrounded by nothing but snow and ice for miles in every direction, the mere thought of fire was enough to make more icy tears form in the corner of the Skydancer’s eyes. Like a creeping shadow, exhaustion began to take over, overwhelming Rankomae’s senses one by one. The young dragon let it overtake him, allowing his last shred of hope to be ripped away by the roaring arctic winds of the Southern Icefield…

Rankomae woke with a start, letting out a small yelp before he realized where he was. Kyoria, his mate, was wide awake at his side, staring into his eyes with deep concern. Realizing he must have been dreaming, Rankomae apologized for waking her and nuzzled his head against her neck, taking comfort in her presence and allowing it to wash away the memories that had resurfaced in his nightmare. Rankomae had been only a few days old when his clan had abandoned him in the Southern Icefield. The bright red of his wings made Rankomae a liability to a clan that specialized in using camouflage to hunt. His birth clan believed any coloration that stood out against the white snow was a hindrance to the clan’s survival, and Rankomae was only a few weeks old when he was unceremoniously left to freeze to death alone in the unforgiving arctic tundra. Of course, being transgender on top of his “inferior” genes didn’t help Rankomae’s case.

That fateful day, as Rankomae lay half-frozen in the ice, he was fully prepared to die. In fact, somewhere deep down, a desolate part of his spirit believed that he deserved it, simply for being who he was. He certainly never expected a wandering dragon from a nearby clan to find him and save his life. To this day, he still didn’t know the dragon’s name. He had awoken in a pitch-black cave, was offered some food and water from outstretched talons, and was told to leave the cave as soon as he could to fly due east. Stunned that fate had given him a second chance at life, Rankomae followed his rescuer’s instructions and never looked back.

It took him three days to reach the Ashfall Wastes. On the morning of the third day, Rankomae smelled smoke. Although he was near death and extremely malnourished, Rankomae’s smile was brighter than it had ever been. A few hours later he spotted land, and after another hour, he caught his first glimpse of the most beautiful thing in the world: fire. A waterfall of magma, flowing straight into the ocean, appeared out of the mist before his eyes, and Rankomae pumped his exhausted wings faster, knowing that whatever land lay before him, it was home.

Since the day he arrived, Rankomae never spent a day outside the Ashfall Wastes. After exploring the land and regaining his strength for several weeks, Rankomae settled down with a clan that accepted him for who he was, and never looked back. At the time, he truly believed he couldn’t be happier. After all, he was surrounded by the most beautiful thing in the world and a clan of dragons that had quickly become family. He had also discovered a hidden passion for art, and spent almost every day nestled in a cave that acted as his studio, creating masterpieces from a mixture of ash and glass made from the magma itself. Then, one fateful day, all that changed when Rankomae watched a female Spiral named Kyoria fall from the sky and hurtle towards her impending death in the magma river that Rankomae had come to love…

Rankomae was snapped out of his reverie by the playful scrape of teeth against his cheek. Kyoria gave a mischievous chuckle and wrapped her glass wings around her mate, banishing all remaining thoughts of his nightmare. On the day Kyoria fell from the sky, Rankomae had been the one to save her. He fashioned Kyoria new wings of glass after her own had been obliterated by the lava, and throughout her long and intense healing process, Rankomae had never once left her side.

Satisfied that Rankomae was okay, Kyoria closed her eyes and drifted back to sleep, her body still entwined with the Skydancer she loved. Rankomae gazed down at his mate, his heart too full of devotion and adoration to express in words. Before he drifted back to sleep himself, Rankomae gave one last thought to his past, back when he believed nothing could possibly be more beautiful than fire. Rankomae smiled softly and nestled his face next to Kyoria’s. He had never been more happy to be proven wrong.
