By the time you finally meet them, you've convinced yourself that the entire clan has banded together to pull some sort of prank on you. There's no way the leader of a settlement this large could just up and disappear for so long, right? And yet, somehow, you find yourself standing before the hulking form of a Gaoler. They're hard to look at, in the first few minutes, it's almost like the color of their fur is... shifting. What little light there is this far down is caught by the jagged shards of crystal jutting from their hide and thrown back against the walls in an eye-searing display. They can't seem to walk quite right. Every step, regal as they attempt to look, is stiffened and weighed by the enormous spires. Their mouth slowly lifts into an approximation of a smile, and they dip their head towards you. "I believe," comes a deep, awful rumbling, "that you've made a wrong turn." Iridian is best described as absent. They deal little with the day-to-day of Scarlet Fever despite the appearance they try to upkeep. Even that, as of late, has slipped. Every trip into the deepest levels of the comms station results in a shorter return and the progression of their crystalline infection. Time spent with their mate, Valerian, has become increasingly infrequent. People, especially older members of the clan, have begun to gossip in hushed tones over what exactly Iridian's doing with all that free time. Some claim it's the illness, others believe they're unfaithful, those who know better stay silent. The stone began to speak to Iridian from the moment they set foot onto the border. It'll stop, it promised in a thousand voices, if you help us. It led the way on the first night, dragging an already exhausted Iridian down, down, down. A body, it begged, a body is all we need. Iridian, dread lacing their words, asked if it wanted theirs. It will be pure. Untwisted. Empty. It hissed. Your veins run black. The following days find Iridian regretting their abandonment of the Sentry order. Days turn to months, and months to years, and they find that they no longer have the capacity for regret. |
