Vayne and Sasha are respected for their brutality. Kelpie and Orion are respected for their composure. Linette, most beautiful of them all, possesses both. She acts as the face of the Council whenever a meeting with other cities occurs- she lacks the comradery with killers that Vayne keeps, but is far better at negotiating with nobler company. In every meeting, she gives the impression of a friendly, regal dragon, and the other officials leave with respect and affection in their hearts. it is only her fellow council members that recognize the deep pragmatism that runs in her blood. Arcane dragons are scientists, after all- and Linette is the best of them. She knows how to get results, and she has never been satisfied with anything less than perfect.

And no matter what she does, she has never found perfection with her own beauty. All the dragons in the city regard her as the most gorgeous dragon they've ever seen- but it isn't enough. She only has one body- only one set of scales. What of someone who despised pink eyes? Despised transparent wings? Despised star-spun scales? For so long, her heart ached- there was no way to change freely between traits. No way to become a true Aphrodite- different to every dragon that saw her.

Except there was. The Arcade. Deep in the underbelly of the city, ultraviolet lights and shaggy, patterned carpet creep into the abandoned houses that dragons leave behind. Any dragon that stays there for long enough becomes part of the Arcade- their scales turned the same colours as the carpet.

The same moving, shifting colours. The infected dragons rarely leave their new homes, but she's seen one before. An Aether with brilliant purple-and-green fur that shifted as soon as it saw her looking at it. In an instant, the dragon was unrecognizable. A living chameleon. As it had scrambled into the shadows, she had realised the resource right under her nose. Something was in the Arcade. Something that could give a dragon the ability to pattern-shift. She just had to find it.
