_F I R S T　E N C O U N T E R_

____You stopped in your path when you reached the lowest part of the cavernous cave system. A large beam of light shone down about what seemed to be a large tree sprouting from the floor of the cave. Despite the cold tundra outside no snow seemed to be falling inside of this cavern. Instead this place was filled with chirping birds and frolicking animals all residing around the gigantic tree. You suddenly felt the presence of a large dragon. You felt afraid to turn around but heard a whisper close to your ear.

____"That is a tree."

____A large Imperial followed by a Timber Tender walked past you and stared lovingly at the tree. "This is Treefurt." You thought he was talking about the Timber Tender but then realized he was motioning at the tree. "Come. Say hello to Treefurt." You inched closer and gave a nervous wave to the tree. Was the tree sentient or something? Why was he so determined to make you say hello?

____"No. I want you to really say hello to Treefurt. They want to be your friend. You have to say hello now." You reached out and shook one of the branches while giving a greeting. The Imperial looked satisfied with your attempt and returned to his work leaving the Timber Tender to stare at you before it too returned to helping the Imperial. The Imperial motioned at you to come over. As you came closer you realized that he was holding a small sapling in his claws with a smile of contentedness. "This is Treefurt Junior." He placed the sapling back into the warm ground and motioned at you to hold one of Treefurt's large branches. He began tying bells on the branches. A soft tinkling sound filled the large sunny cavern.

____Your arms were getting tired and the branch suddenly swung from your claws, hitting the Imperial in the face. His thick goggled were knocked off but otherwise he seemed alright. You apologized profusely until he opened his eyes. When he did a small gasp escaped your mouth. Arcane eyes. What was an arcane dragon doing raising trees?

____"Surely you must hurt these trees from time to time," you exclaimed.

____A hurt look washed onto the face of the Imperial. "I would never hurt any of my tree friends." He gathered his goggles and looked back at you once more before flying up to the higher canopy of the tree where you could not reach. Despite meeting so many dragons you still held some of your prejudices and "expectations" of what certain dragons should do. You remembered again the words of the clan leader warning you that things were not always what they seemed.

____You sadly began to leave but realized that the sapling had been bent by your commotion. A sense of urgency flooded over you as you hastily grabbed the sapling, stabilizing it gently, until it once more stood on its own. The Imperial had been so happy about the sapling. You didn't want him to be even sadder. As you turned to leave once more you felt two large arms embrace you. You looked up to see the Imperial hugging you with all of his might. "Any friend to a tree is a friend to me. Thank you." You could see the word "CRISPIN" written across the top of his goggles. With a warm feeling in your belly you returned his embrace. "Look! Treefurt wants to hug you too!" You felt a branch slowly wrapping around you. A look of horror briefly washed over your face before you accepted the embrace.

____The tree was sentient.
