No one really knows who or what Modthryth is. Omkir met him at a mage college, and knows that he is a brilliant and experimental mage with a deep interest in spirits, but beyond that, he's a mystery. He can most often be found holed up in a dark room with Poe, working on some strange new magical experiment. Whether his intentions are good or bad are unclear, though for now he seems not to mean anyone any direct harm.
