Kaza [kä·zhä]
The Risen Queen
The one who saved the King

“No Queen has clean hands.”

Kaza’s life has always been filled with twists and turns mostly outside of her control; her journey into the Tangled Woods was no different. Cast out from her original clan for falling ill and being incapable of keeping up with the group on their pilgrimage to a new home, she finds herself wandering aimlessly, but not helplessly. Her health had returned to her, mostly, and she was perfectly capable of rejoining her clan…but something had told her to turn towards the woods instead of heading in their direction.

It was a cloudless night and the moon was shining brightly on her back when she felt a low rumbling of the earth beneath her feet and heard the rustling of branches ahead. Curious, she ducked low and approached a clearing where the sound called to her loudest.

A Guardian? she thought to herself. What is this big fool doing out here in the woods alone?

Amused and bored of her own journey at the moment, Kaza decided to follow behind slowly and quietly; it wasn’t every day she came across another dragon traveling alone.

As if the stranger could hear her thoughts, it spoke aloud to itself.

“How did I even get here,” he asked.

Laughing softly and not intending to answer, Kaza found herself doing just that. “You walked here, I think that is quite obvious.”

She seized up briefly, realizing milliseconds too late that she actually just said that out loud. To a Guardian. More than double her size. The stranger turned quickly and faced her with the same amount of tension she felt in her own muscles. Realizing this, Kaza relaxed; her wings took a more casual resting position. When he finally spoke, he hid his face behind a wing. Curious. Also, somewhat endearing. Why did she find that endearing…

“Do you have a name,” his voice rumbled deeply but gently across her skin. Her eyes widened slightly as she raised her head to look at him directly.

“Yes,” her voice was small but strong nonetheless. “You can call me Kaza. But what can I call you?”

The stranger’s wing dropped slowly from his face, and it was then she realized he was severely disfigured. Her curiosity spiked. What happened? From where did this dragon travel? Why was he alone? He smiled softly at her as he replied, a sight that lit her skin on fire.

“Krieg. Please, call me Krieg.”
