Biography

| AURORA | [♫] Child of the Northern Lights
{ He/Him | Gay }

Betrothed upon their births and named in reflection of their union, Aurora and Borealis represented the best of their households. Each had been born into noble houses revered for generations by the Icewarden; their predecessors were demigods, touched by their Patron, and their siblings were ambassadors to other lands, who sought glory for their Flight through diplomacy. Though neither was the eldest child, it was they who had been chosen to succeed their progenitors and merge their two houses through marriage.

Yet, through a fluke of timing, Aurora was born abroad, while her mother and father were on business in the Sunbeam Ruins. The Icewarden accepted her regardless, but her heart pined secretly for His sister, the Lightweaver, and the golden land she had left behind. Her marriage to Borealis was an unhappy one, for he was cold, as an Ice dragon should be, and she was warm of heart and mind.

In the end, she stayed only long enough to rear their heir—then, under cover of night, she fled to the Sunbeam Ruins and submitted herself to exaltation at the Beacon of the Radiant Eye.

Overcome with grief, Borealis looked upon the child she had left for him and laid upon him a curse. “I curse you with her name,” he said, “your traitorous mother’s name. May it bring you the greatest misery; no child of hers deserves to be loved.”

So it was that Aurora, bearing his mother’s cursed name, grew to be as cold as his father. True to Borealis’ word, the child was raised without love, as merely the means to an end. He learned many things from Borealis, but kindness and compassion were not among them. He was not allowed friends, nor playmates, nor lovers, even into his adult years; always, his father watched and ensured that he remained isolated from his peers, even from the Icewarden Himself.

When the Icewarden did at last touch him, he saw his father’s hurt clearly for the first time. Through his Patron’s eyes, he perceived his mother’s flight from the Southern Icefield, the Lightweaver welcoming Her lost daughter, and the curse his father had laid upon him. “Why did you show me this?” he asked.

“Because,” the Icewarden replied, “you are your mother’s son.”

He felt then. He felt sorrow, and loss, and loneliness; he felt them all deeply, cripplingly. His mother had abandoned him in the care of a father who had never loved him, and his father had abandoned him in the name of revenge against her, and he had never known a drake or dam who cared for him as he desired, in that moment, so desperately to be cared for.

“Please,” he begged, “release me from Your service. Let me repair what my father has broken within me.”

“Go,” said the Icewarden, “and return to Me when you are whole once more.”

Aurora traveled across the sea, to the golden land that had seduced his mother from his father’s arms, where he believed he may finally know peace. It was comfortable there, the climate mild, the people inviting in a way he had never been permitted to know, and he thought he understood why his mother had left him. Perhaps she had wanted him to choose this for himself, as she had—or perhaps she had been selfish. He likes to think she had his best interests at heart when she went into exaltation.

Regardless, he did choose it and now spends long, lazy days dozing in patches of sunlight, which he imagines to be his mother’s fingers carding through his hair.
