A spirit is born only when another dies. They never meet their predecessors, but they know their name and their purpose, for those things are now theirs, as deeply intimate to them as any parent’s love. From the time of their birth to the moment of their death, they carry out the duties of the one who gave them life; it is the least they can do as thanks for being granted such a great gift.

Nagame was once a malevolent rain spirit, who brought disaster upon the lands she walked. In her wake, farmlands flooded, rivers spilled their banks, and death came to nest beneath dark waters. Such crimes could not go unpunished, and so Europa was sent to slay her, thus putting a sound end to her wickedness.

Eons passed, and Nagame’s soul was born once more, into a young and fearful body. He knew little of his predecessor, yet he called her “mother” and loved her dearly—so much so that he wished that the life he had been given could have remained hers. As had all those before him, Nagame took up his mother’s mantle and wandered Sornieth in search of a place in need of a very long rain; and as had his mother, he became cruel in his travels and sought to drown the world in sorrow.

Again, Nagame’s path crossed with Europa’s, and they clashed. Europa was victorious, but pity stayed their hand. Rather than kill Nagame and begin the cycle anew, they would bring peace to his troubled heart. Perhaps, with time, he may come to see the joy in helping others and atone for the sins he had committed in his mother’s name.

So it was that Clan Feldspar acquired a very stubborn rain spirit.
