Name Origin: Definition - a fine-grained grey, green, or bluish metamorphic rock that can be easily split into smooth, flat pieces, sometimes used for writing on while framed in wood to be used in a school setting. Dragon Background: Each one of Faerie's children share their body with a spirit. These spirits use Faerie and his line as hosts, feeding off their magic to survive. These spirits manifest in the form of fireflies. Whether or not these spirits are helpful or harmful depends on the individual.
He is a triplet of Silver and Conscious, brother of Spirit and Soul, stepbrother of Unknown, Chiron, Kaladin, and Castor, son of Faerie and Basset. Slate's transgender, something unrecognizable until he reached adulthood. Reaching adulthood was difficult for him, but the friends he made in the clan while he was just a hatchling pulled him through the rut he was in, especially after misplacing his first pearl.
Slate is self conscious about the dark color of his fireflies, as he believes they aren't as impressive as his siblings. He goes along with Silver's tricks, hoping he can be as cool as her.
Though, this is not the only time Slate loses his pearl. From the eyes of all Pearlcatchers (or at least the Pearlcatcher community of the clan, consisting of Augur, Arzi, Riverbend, Spectre, and Virtuous), being pearl-less is greatly frowned upon as it represents the very essence of a Pearlcatcher. He was the most close with Spectre, the only other male Pearlcatcher of the clan. Spectre acted like a mentor to Slate, sometimes even a father as if he was part of the family, but only after Slate nuzzled his way into Spectre's cold heart.
He met Expiry and Bailiwick as they arrived around the same time he did. They made fast friends mostly by Slate sharing many of Silver's pranks with them, resulting in some very unhappy elder dragons. Expiry loves Slate's fireflies, often talking to them as their own, individual spirit and pretends to know what they're saying. It makes Slate laugh as she makes up silly conversations that aren't at all what the spirits are expressing.
Personality: Slate remains passive all through adulthood, his introverted self allowing only the fewest qualified dragons in. He's very secretive, having lost his childhood optimism in the world due to the buildup of jeering peers regarding his questionable identity and lack of trust from being pulled from the comfort of his home lair. This led him to hold on tight to whoever he had, his loyalty bond stronger than anything else.
