Owner of Mads & Co.

"Please don't beg, it's unbecomimg."

Theme
Meet Maddox Bane, proprietor of Mads & Co. and a damn good mage. Born half incubus and ethereally gorgeous, Mad can charm just about anyone. Animals, however, are an entirely different matter; much to his chagrin, they tend to avoid him like the plague.

Foul mouthed, sarcastic, a wine lover, and overly friendly are just a few words that would describe him. The other words one might use to describe him aren't very nice so best leave it at that. If Mads takes a genuine liking to someone he will brute force his way into friendship or simply ignore the other party's protests. He fancies himself a modern day philosopher of sorts, but many would say that the insane ramblings of a half-incubi mage could hardly be taken for any sort of "philosophy".

And insane he is.

Maddox has always been a talented mage. From the moment he drew his first breath it was clear to everyone around him that he was destined for something. Whether that something was to become one of the best mages the world has ever known or that he would go out in a blaze of firey glory unlike anything seen by dragonkind before was up for debate. What wasn't up for debate was the lad's intense desire to seek out knowledge. That desire would end up being both his downfall and the answer to his prayers.

You see, there's a legend about an ancient grimoire not of this world filled to the brim with forbidden arcane knowledge. This grimoire belonged to a being with no known name so vast in size and power that to gaze upon him is akin to falling into a black hole. It is also said that this godlike being takes on many different faces, never revealing his true face to the living. Intrigued, Maddox made it his life's mission to track down the fabled grimoire and use it to become the world's most powerful mage.

After years of searching, asking questions, and scouring nearly every page of every book, Maddox finally found his answer and it wasn't particularly good news. In order to fetch this ancient book of magic, he'd half to tear a hole in this dimension to the Hell dimension. Needless to say, this would be no easy undertaking but he did have two things on his side: his own magical abilities and his incubi blood. After all, it is far easier for someone with ties to the dimension they wish to enter to be successful.

With all of this in mind, Maddox set about opening the rift between the two worlds. It took him a mere week to succeed and once he did wasted no time jumping inside, to hell (ha) with the consequences.

When you try to picture a Hell dimension, what is it that you see? Fire and brimstone? Ice and bone as far as the eye can see? Twisted, malformed creatures with jaws dripping with saliva? You'd be half right. There are layers to the Hell dimension, each one more horrible than the last. The further down you go, the less hopeful you feel until there's nothing left of you and all you want is for the torment to end.

This Hell is the place where his father was born, though he never really knew him. The incubi and succubi here are hardly the highest demons on the totem pole, but they do enjoy a certain level of comfort. Known for their wily ways and astonishing good looks, the other demons treat them with respect. It's not uncommon for them to be gifted all sorts of things by their demonic admirers.

But that is neither here nor there. What you're here for is the story of how Mad Mads went insane and then promptly opened Mads and Co. as a result of his quest for power.

Once inside Maddox had to make his way through the maze of horrors around him, down, down, down. It took him several days (at least two months in Sornieth time) of traversing the dangers of this dimension in order to track down the book he'd been searching for for all of these years. Bound in leather that looked far more like the hides of dragons than that of animals, it sat on a podium deep within the rings of Hell. You'd think something so precious as this would be guarded day and night but no, it was simply tucked away in the darkness collecting dust.

Excited to the point of nearly having a breakdown, Mads lurched forward and took into his hands the answer to all of his dreams. Not wanting to waste another second he threw open the book and-

His mind broke, an almost audible snap as the words on the pages assaulted every single one of his senses. It's a hard thing to describe, really. The feeling of your mind becoming untethered from the reality you once knew. As if things couldn't get any worse there was suddenly a sound in the near distance. A scuttling sound like the legs of a giant centipede, crawling along the ground and up the brimstone walls, closing in at a rapid pace. Was he hearing things? Was it just in his head?

Slamming the book shut Maddox thought to run with his prize, abscond back to the safety of Sornieth a new man. Sadly, before he could, the beast was upon him. At first, he didn't know what he was looking at. It did resemble a centipede, but one only your worst nightmare could conjure up. The top half of the beast looked like a man, the place where two eyes should be a cluster of at least ten pulsating eyes looking in different directions. Twisted and broken limbs poked out here and there down both sides of the thing, some insect like and others humanoid, fingers wiggling and grasping at the dirt beneath it as if impatient for the kill.

Mads expected to die then and there. This thing was going to devour him whole like a fly after he'd come all this way! At least he would die knowing he'd seen inside the grimoire. From what little he did read it was safe to say that it was worth all the trouble.

And then the beast spoke.

His voice echoed all around them, rattling inside his skull painfully. Fruitlessly he tried to cover his ears, but there was no stopping the sound like a tainted angel's trumpet. The beast explained that he was the owner of that book, the king of this domain and soon to be his executioner. Seeing an opportunity, Maddox gathered as much of his senses as he could manage and suggested something else, a deal. He would return to Sornieth and as penance for his crime collect one million souls in exchange for his life. There would only be one thing he'd request.

Intrigued, the beast listened, clawed fingers tapping against the ground in thought.

Pleased by what they were hearing, the beast took on a new form. This one even harder to understand than the last. Twelve pairs of wings as black as night and a face without lips or a nose. What facial features it lacked it made up for in eyes, eyes all over its pulsating veiny body- if it could be called that.

Maddox would do all of this so long as he was allowed to take the grimoire with him. He alone would be the only one to read it and he alone would be the only one to use the power found within its pages. Bold, considering the circumstances, but it worked. One million souls sent back to this realm, invisible chains locked around his wrists and ankles so long as his debt remained unpaid.

Grimoire in hand Maddox did what he promised he would. He returned home and, in a stroke of genius, formed Mads & Co. A detective agency of sorts that offered an eclectic range of services.

Need someone "taken care of"? Is there a monster problem in your sleepy little village? An ancient relic in need of retrieving? A mystery that needs solving? Well, look no further! The mages at Mads & Co. have your back. All you need to do is sign on the dotted line (please ignore the fine print) and they'll be sure to get the job done in seventy two hours or less.

  • Loves to party, doesn't appreciate people who are wet blankets.
  • The receptionist at the front desk of Mads &Co. is a beautiful sloth demon who hates answering the phone. She prefers filing her nails and chewing gum, thank you very much.
  • He can move freely between both dimensions with ease thanks to the grimoire.
