The big one, by the entrance to the outpost, which I have flown past twice a day for years. Had to swerve, right at the last minute, and I still mussed up some wing feathers. I'm just glad the kid I'm meant to be training had gone ahead of me. I don't know what came over me. That's not true. I can hear you in my head with your little smirk and your singsong: I don't believe you. I was thinking about you, the last time I saw you: the soft touch of your talons on my face, the the taste of dawn on your lips. The home we made, between us, our wings spread to block out the world. I was thinking about you, and all I could see was that morning at our tree, all I could smell was that damp, dark morning, moss and wet wood. And then I almost crashed into a pillar. When I got back one of the researchers asked me why I was smiling, and I had to find some lie to tell them, so that was the end of that daydream. Noa, do you ever think about leaving? Flying away to some distant land, somewhere where there would be no border, no gods, no duties to keep us apart, somewhere where we could have whole days, whole nights together.
