"You can't worry about everyone."

Once a sweet and mothering dragon, Jadeite has changed greatly from who her mate Pyrite knew her to be. Long ago, the two were parents raising a nest of hatchlings. Pyrite taught them all they needed to know to be proper coatls - how to groom, how to catch fish from riverbanks, how to sing - while Jadeite kept the nest for them, cleaning and coaxing them to eat the fish they didn't favor, singing them to sleep, and generally being rather subservient and soft-spoken. As far as Pyrite knew, she was perfectly happy. When they lost their hatchlings, things changed. Oh, how things changed. Pyrite was torn apart with grief and disgust with himself for being unable to protect them, and would spend many days avoiding his mate, unwilling to face her and feeling like a failure. One day he returned to the nest and she was gone. While Pyrite grieved and sank into a miserable life that consisted of little more than eating and sleeping and avoiding contact with all other dragons, Jadeite learned to survive. She scavenged often and she scavenged well, sneaking into the lairs of other clans and snatching away supplies that she needed or digging through ruins, swamps, ashen wastelands - anywhere that might have something worth taking. She learned to be suspicious of dragons she had never met, and guarded around those she had. After several incidents where she was caught unawares, she learned to always watch her back - but to watch her sides and front just as well. After thieves stole months' worth of supplies, she learned to sleep away from her things, to hide them well and to hide herself better. Every time she was caught stealing, she learned from the experience and became a better thief. Every time she made a mistake, she vowed to fix it. And so it was purely by chance that she came across Sunfalle, where Pyrite had ended up many years after she had left him behind. Her intent was to steal from the hoard, but Pyrite himself discovered her stealing from them and, in his shock, roused half the clan against her. He defended her and argued profusely that she would make it up to them, much to Jadeite's annoyance. She agreed to stay only reluctantly, and only with the term that she could go wherever she chose in the territory. It surprised even Pyrite when Anamika agreed. Jadeite promptly began to take note of the territory and the clan's strengths and weaknesses only for Pyrite to start following her around as if nothing had happened. Her frustration mounts every time she intends to go out by herself and he follows her again, and Jadeite suspects that very soon she will have to tell him that she left him because she wanted to, not because of some other circumstance. |
