Though he is satisfied with his life today, Ulfric was once a nocturne who led a clan alongside his brother Tullius. The two worked together on everything, with every decision being made after plenty of thought and debate. They could almost read each other’s thoughts, and so they could easily watch their backs and stay safe. Their clan was prosperous and happy. Or so they thought. But when bogsneaks began to pop up across Sornieth, a traitorous group within Ulfric’s clan got their hands on two scrolls to change him and Tullius into bogsneaks. The brothers were tricked into reading the scrolls, and then the traitors attacked them, betting (correctly) that the transformation would leave them both weak and too confused to fight back. The traitors’ goal was only to drive them away, but they underestimated how defenseless the two former leaders would be. Ulfric and Tullius were cast out of the clan heavily wounded and stunned at the sudden loss of everything they had built, and shortly after Tullius passed away from his wounds. Some time passed, and Ulfric became used to his new body, recovered from his wounds, and planned his vengeance. Finding Fenton, Cliona, and Zykios seemed to be a stroke of luck - here were three young bogsneaks, all capable in their own right, all feeling as though the world had rejected them. If he could become their leader, he thought, he could train them into a proper fighting force and perhaps return to his clan and claim leadership again by force. But Fenton, though young, was clearly spirited and outright refused to let Ulfric order them around. His anger overflowed and scared even his young wards - and in the face of such fierce protectiveness, Ulfric suddenly decided that maybe he could do something better than train hatchlings to fight for his own revenge quest. He backed down and offered instead to follow Fenton’s lead and help the little group of bogsneaks thrive. Ulfric did help them with hunting and learning to fend for themselves, but most of all he kept an eye on Fenton. At first he gave the young bogsneak an outlet for his anger, but over time he began to suggest healthier ways to work it out, and then ways to keep his cool entirely. With some practice, Fenton could even face direct challenges without being rattled. It came in handy when the group of bogsneaks traveled to help Sunfalle and were faced on all sides with mistrust and opposition, and thanks to their leader’s calm confidence, the four of them found a place in the community once its problems were dealt with. In the back of his mind Ulfric sometimes thinks about Tullius, about the clan he couldn’t save. But then he turns to the clan he has, and the friends he’s made, and he knows that letting go of his anger was the right choice to make. |
