Zaedia

To her family, Zaedia is nothing. Her connection to the pestilence in her veins is strong, incredibly so, but her weak will when it comes to cruelty is what sets her apart. She has training with various weapons and poisons, with how to efficiently end a life, but she cannot bring herself to do it. The mere idea sickens her, and she shakes whenever she holds a blade. Zaedia wishes to heal, to help, but her magic does not allow it. There are times when her magic surges, and she weeps. The tears are either a pitch-black or a wicked green that mimics the pools in Plague, and her body freezes while the surge affects the area immediately around her.


There was a time when she was a ridgeback like her parents. When her skin was speckled, and covered in hard gems. However... things change.

She doesn't remember who did it, or why. If it was her mother, a sibling, or just a member of her mother's kingdom, it doesn't matter. Zaedia remembers being grabbed roughly, then thrown into one of the pools of pestilence. If she was expected to survive or not doesn't matter, because she did, and she came out different than before.

It was an agonizing experience to say the least, and she vaguely remembers screams that she's able to now identify as her own. Her body was changing painfully, forcefully, into something different. Smaller. Her spines fell off as her form shrank, her body curled up on itself and saturated in the ooze of the pool. Her patterns shifted and changed, her wings taking on a translucency they never before possessed. The gems that hindered and pained her so much had melted and smeared across her skin, taking on the texture and flexibility of the flesh beneath.

Eventually, Zaedia passed out there, and was later discovered by Tethys. The noble was horrified, and quickly fled with the Princess in the night to get her somewhere else, anywhere else but where they'd been.

Despite the agony she endured, Zaedia felt... better. Better than she'd ever felt her entire life. She no longer hurt, no longer felt weak with sickness. She felt rejuvenated and energized, and yet... overwhelmed with sadness she could not explain.
