______ Not so long ago, a family boarded a ship, from a land of glittering snow and roaring blizzards to a place of balmy sunshine and towering redwoods. In search of better opportunity and exposure to the world at large outside of their icy home for their new generations, they disembarked in the cliffside region of Caerna. Merchants by trade - quite accomplished and wealthy to go with it - the family bought land from the then-king and with it, titles and status as lower nobility in the kingdom. Influence in hand, they settled into the kingdom nicely.

______ Marcial is one of the eldest sons born to this family, expansive and welcoming. If there is one thing to be said of his family, it's their abundance and close relationships. Known well enough by their proliferation in Caerna, eyes catastrophically blue and unfamiliar, Marcial's father furthered their renown as an adept businessman. Though lower nobility in the hierarchy, his family's business dealings saw a younger Marcial frequently surrounded by the wealthier and more influential of the kingdom, dressed in stuffy, far too stiff clothing and bored out of his mind. His distaste for social climbing would never quite disappear.

______ Marcial grew up into a remarkably warm-hearted and at ease soul. Open and friendly, he let worries roll off of him like water. He vastly preferred the intellectual path of being a child of nobility, as opposed to the knightly path, and occupied his days with learning. Whether his family's trade from his father or history from books, interrupted only by social events, Marcial considers his voracious learning of his youth time well spent.

B I O G R A P H Y

______ Once he was older and more sociable, Marcial would attend a ball in his late teen years that would alter the course of his life when he followed a girl who looked to be on the verge of panic out of the ballroom and into the night. Due to his family's lower nobility status, they hadn't had many interactions with the royal family. So, as he stood in the night chill consoling a stranger who looked like she desperately needed it, he didn't recognize Queen Vasya, recently crowned. When they returned to the ball together, the girl was remarkably more cheerful, Marcial learned her identity after they split apart and his siblings swarmed him, badgering him to know what he had been doing speaking to the young queen. Marcial paused, glanced over his shoulder at her retreating form, and remarked thoughtfully, "She's sweet."

______ Before the night was out, a royal courtier approached him and asked if he might consider starting correspondence with the queen. Marcial agreed, evidently just as intrigued by the queen as she was with him. Life soon became a precarious balancing act; His family wasn't oblivious to the opportunity in front of them to advance their station and pestered Marcial incessantly. Marcial understood, as all noble children do, that he had duties to his family. Still, yet, he was determined to not let this impact his relationship with Vasya, whatever it became. He kept her close to his chest, divulging no information about her or sharing her letters. He found Vasya enchanting, fascinatingly smart, and lively in a way he didn't expect. It didn't take too long for him to fall in love with her. Marcial will firmly claim he knew it was inevitable for him.

______ Vasya would take longer to reciprocate and Marcial would not have minded if she never had. Luckily for him, she fell just as hard. The two married soon and have been deeply happy since. More suited to each other than they could imagine, Marcial fills out the spaces where Vasya lacks and she does the same for him. He has a raw admiration for her and is never far from her. As far as he's concerned, his place is at her side as long as she wants him there.

______ The transition to king was not an easy one for Marcial. He's hardly kingly, lax and informal in an unexpected way. The responsibilities and expectations demanded of a king were new to him and much more serious than anything he had dealt with in his family's business. His first year as king was, without a doubt, a crash course.

______ He found his niche, eventually, quickly realizing his airy, charming demeanor - contrasted against his wife's weighty, serious air - was useful when engaging with the people. Personal connections came easy to him and he was good at feeling more like a friend than a king. He fell fast into being responsible for the bulk of the crown's charity and social work in the kingdom. He fields petitions for aid and is usually the one who hosts open court sessions. Diplomacy and interacting with the people have become his primary duties as king. Personally, he's incredibly glad it ended up this way.

______ Marcial is still learning, never having imagined a life like this for himself. Still, as long as he can do a little good and support Vasya on the way, he feels he's probably not doing half bad. An earnest and well-meaning king, King Marcial becomes more proficient by the day and will always endeavor to do the best he can. While he personally doesn't care for anyone's opinion except for Vasya's, it doesn't hurt that the people are quite fond of him, too.
