There's a story spoken in whispers
That tells of a mage long lost
Of great power revealed and hidden
In the sky, the grass, and the frost

There's a story spoken in whispers
And believed loud and clear
And though it's nothing but a legend
It's spread by land, by sea, by air

There's a story spoken in whispers
There's a child with the mage's name
And though he's been told all the tales of his namesake
He wonders if they're just messing with his brain

He was born under an alignment of stars
One that spelled out his fate
Written in astral bodies afar, they say
He's the Chosen One for which his clan awaits

So they named him after the revered mage
Because heroes should never be lost in the past
They say he spells the coming of the old mage's discoveries
And say he is the one who will make the stories last

But for all he knows that mage is just a rumour
A ghost of a dragon from out of the blue
A dream of the common dragons
A wish for a hero that never came true

"You're a reminder of our legend," his clanmates tell him
"You have the potential to be him, back to life."
But despite the encouragement and praises
He feels like he's just a living lie

He has his own mind and feelings
He's his own character, not a mage long gone
But no matter what he tells himself, his clanmates say
He's the living image of the one his name corresponds

And it doesn't take long for simple lies
To start becoming the truth
And it's hard to hold on to your own identity
When even being called by your name doesn't soothe

He struggles every single day
Wondering just who he considers himself to be
"Am I the one they speak of in the stories?
"Can I call myself 'me'?"

"Is this what it means to be Chosen
"To be called by a name you hate
"To be raised like a living trophy
"With a dead hero's past as your fate?"

He thinks there's a time he wanted something different
There was a time when he just wanted to be himself
But now that so many tell him differently
His change of mind can't be helped

He's starting to think there's some relevance
In why they compare him to the mage long gone
And when everyone's telling him the same things -
How can they all be wrong?

There's a story spoken in whispers
And he's starting to hear murmurs in his head
But my child, keep those voices stifled
You know it's not wise to disturb the dead
