Mirai was ć̴͉͈̤͉͓̗͇̞͚̾ŭ̶͔̘̭̬̖͖̗̬̑̑̍͘r̷̡̫̮̲͔͍̪͙̓͋͂̉̽̎̄̅͑́ş̴̝͉̼̱͒̅̓̈̅́͠ͅe̴͈̹͚̠̅ḑ̷͙̫̤̞̼̩̰̠̬͍̣͙̣̔̄͜

That wasn’t an exaggeration, or a metaphor. It was simply true.

Her veins coursed with pain, every day a fresh agony. Sometimes, to her it seemed that even in sleep she ached, through the colors that danced behind her eyelids made it easier, dulled the agony. She fell in the habit of closing her eyes for hours. Behind them, her sight jumped and squirmed, flashes of color and reaching arms encroaching on unnatural particles.

She roamed- what else could she do? Staying in one place was yet another agony, her constant drive for something, anything, to drive her mind from the pain forcing her paws to wander. Nothing succeeded for long.

Mirai thought that maybe the distractions of other dragons would help, but none deigned to go near her. Her presence was disturbing, disgusting to them, she sent chills down their spines and horrid thoughts into their heads, and they shied away before she could even speak.

Her world was dark and cold and unforgiving. S̸̨̻͌͆̇͝ọ̷̙̻̇ͅ ̸̡̥̄͑̚s̵̞̔̈͛̚h̴̻̬̺͑̊ḛ̴̛̾̈́ ̴̳̮̌͠ḽ̶̞̓̉ë̶̝͚͇̬́̾͘ą̶̣͈̄͛r̶͓̗̭̫̀̐n̷̜̫̔ḙ̴̛̙̍͒d̸̫̠͛̓ ̴̻̦̬̂̌̂̈́t̴͓͊͆̕o̶̰͖̓ ̵̱̜͚̔͐̒l̸̡̧̛̹̱̊̒͛o̸̖̳̥̔̋v̴̛̮̓̾͛e̸͒͜͝ ̸͚͇̪͔͗̈́t̷̨̳̫͇͗ḧ̸̪͎̜́̊͌é̸̲́̔͝ ̴̰͎̆͂̽͠d̶͙̜̎̃̌̔a̵͇̹̬͂͋r̵̞̮̤͌̏k̵̲̹̬̿.̴̩̘̬̔̉̈͌ͅ

It took a few years for the dark to start to whisper to her, but when it did, she embraced it fully. The voices were something, better than nothing to be sure, and they twined around her mind and ears, murmuring secrets.

The secrets she learned were horrible, and truthful, and she filled herself with them. They spoke of space, and endless eternities spent d̸̨̖͈̖͎͙̬̥͖̣̩̥̜̳̲͕̻̅͋̾͌̽̒̔̈́̈̌ṟ̶̛̛̝̺͍̟̻̭͖͍̮̮̮̖̞̾͊̿̽͐̄͛̇͌̾̅̑̑͆͑̾͂̂͘͜͜͠͠͝͝ḯ̸̡̛̗̲̻͚̼̙̟̣͓͉͚̜̼̫͇̝͎̗̣̃̍̓̏͆̅͒̿̆͜͠͝f̶̛͖̲͚̗͍̼̭͓̪͚̤̮̝̦̮̭̫̏̀͆̔͌̊̽̿̇͑͒͑́̀̿̚͝t̸̡̡̛͈͈̦͔̙̫̍̔̀͋͗̔̽̅̒̍͊͑̓͗̾̈͆͝͠ḯ̴̢̡͕̤̻͍̮̹̫̰͇̰̘͉̯͚̓̌͒̚̚͜͜͠͝͝n̷̨̢̡̧̛̘̘͚̥͈͚̰͚͉̼̮͈̼̗̗̏̅͐͗̌̍̆͐̏̿ģ̴̨̛̦͕͍͓̮̝͕̳̱͓̯̺͉̖̪͖̤͙͈̗͗͑͌̒͆͗̊͒̈̓̽̾͂̀̿͆́͗̚̚̚͜͜͠͝ͅ ̷͇̏̈́̓̊̈̓̿͐̓̈́̀͑̇̔̔́͌̐̏̀̚̚͠͝͝t̷̡͕̭͔̫͓̯͉͍̮͕̥̯͕̭͕̺̱̦̬͖̘͌̈́̃̓̈́̇̄͆̀ḩ̴̛̳̣̱̺͙̩͕͔̤̗̩̱̒͒́͑̋̏̎̾̎̓̏̅̿̀̂̈͌̎̅̿̚͠ͅŗ̵̳̳̳̱̳͖̻̘͇̠̹̞͎̬̺͇̝̟̣̯͙̉̇̋͌̿̈̈́̏͆͐͛̆̐͛̀͛͑̓̈́̓͌̏͂͜ͅo̶̢̢̢̨̠͉̲̝̘̳̤̺̼̩̻͙̗͚̙̻͈͚͉̰̎͊͛̓͛̉͌̂̄̏͒͗̓̆̈̌̋̀̒͘̕̕͠͝u̸̢̗̝̪̘̲̟͉͙̥̹͈̹͚̲͓̠̥̳͍̠͉͈̘̣̿̂̃̋̈͜g̵͍̰̦̈́̊͊̔̈́̔̽͠ḧ̴͇̖̫͚̰̳̦̜̰̩̮̮̀͂̂͆͊̓̑͂̚͜ ̵̡̡̛̦̰̻̲̮̞̟͎͔̭̐̈́͆͛͑̏͋̐̂͂͑̈̍̽̕̚̚̚͝ͅţ̶̢̛̭̫̙̫̹̎͂̄̂͐́͆̐̿̃̽͂̐̃̓̅̃̈h̶͔̍̇̔̆e̵̢͙̜̯̥̿́̊͠ ̷̨̤͖̺͓̠̤̻̻̻̭̻̼̰͍̪͓̮͠ͅc̴̢̗͔̪͔̽͛̈́͒ơ̵̧̨̢̦̤̖̖͓̠̰̗͈̤̳̦̟̠̲̪̮̻̻̗͉͂̈̿̑͛̌́͒̀͗͗̀͛̈́̒͗̽̓͗̚͜s̶̢̨̛̛̞̗̳̜̻͂̂̈͛̆̓̊̆̈̓̑̄̂͐͗̈́͗͛͋̄̚m̶̡̜̼͖̘̭͍̼̭̞̗̰͖̭̎̅̅̀̈́̂̐́͑͆̑͐̌̚͝ó̶̧̡̺̤̟͚͙̲̩̤̳̫̣̩͔̝͐̇̄̇̂̏s̸̟͉͇̪̭͔͌̊̂̅̐̓̉̑̔͑̆͒̓́̀̍̈̍̃̀̿͊̒͌̚͠, consumed by a neverending hunger. They spoke of the discovery of a planet, and the emotions that seethed within as they were prevented by shining gods, torn into shreds and mixed to form the shape of dragons. They howled of a story of the world they so desperately craved being locked away, and when that lock finally broke, they screamed down until they found a dragon with empty veins and an empty heart.

Mirai listened to the whispers of the Shade, the Shade that ran through her blood and in her brain.

She listened, and let herself drown.
