All they remember of before was darkness, cold, and the smell of dead things and mulch. After that was still cold, but no longer dark or smelly. (Ok, it was still a little smelly, but they had stopped noticing pretty quickly.)
The tall ones, Tyrell and Anja, had told them their name was Zori, and welcomed them into the world. So Zori went with it. The tall ones made sure Zori understood that no one was to find them, that they needed to keep hidden, that under no circumstance was anyone to see them. Zori was fine with that.
For a long time, everything was fine. But Zori got bored. They knew every inch of the woods as well as they knew the patterns on their skin. So they made it into a game. How long could they hide without the tall ones noticing? How far could they go away from the forest before Anja called them back. At first, not very far or long at all. Less than half the day and maybe ten paces from the trees. So over about a month they pushed it, staying away longer and slowly going farther. Until one day they met another.
It wasn't like the tall ones, a little smaller than Zori, and very hairy. Zori watched for a while as the hairy thing moved slowly across the stones. Occasionally it would lift up a rock or grumble to its self, but besides that, the not much else happened. But they were patient. They could wait as long as they needed to if it meant figuring out this new creature. And Zori always loved a new game.
