At the edge of the clan’s territory sits what looks to be a cave made of hideous, gnarled tree roots, the trunks of which stick out at odd angles as if they had been shoved unevenly from below. Bells of varying ages and conditions hang from the branches of surrounding trees, chiming dolefully as they are caressed by the wind. Approaching the unusual formation will catch the attention of the three inhabitants -should they be there- and their nine eyes will glint curiously from within. One by one, the triplets slink into the open – a sister followed by her two brothers, each missing one of four eyes. They surround a hollowed-out tree stump outside their den and, sitting on their haunches, place their foreclaws on the rim. Something thick and black bubbles and steams inside the stump. One brother beckons knowingly. They can solve all your problems and soothe your many woes…for a price. Sharp as a new blade and full of savage guile, Hydrocyon will always find a way to twist words while granting wishes. She is a master spell weaver and isn’t afraid to take advantage of those who are desperate. Pay her in glowing or shiny baubles, however, and she’ll be less likely to mess with you. Like her brothers, though, she has a soft spot for hatchlings and will do everything in her power to make sure they are safe and that their problems disappear. Hydrocyon is also weak for animals and can be seen adopting and caring for any that have been orphaned or injured. The only one she has kept by her side is a brightly colored amphithere that coils about her neck like a scarf and helps the triplets gather items for potions and spells. Not surprisingly, the female mirror has an aggressive streak and got into many scuffles as a hatchling – one of which resulted in the loss of her right front eye. Her mother Iolite, a calm spiral, gently cared for the wound and attempted to coax her daughter to be more cool-headed. To her dismay, though not entirely unexpected, her two sons had each clawed one of their own eyes out the following morning. “Why can’t you three just be normal?” they remembered her asking as she bandaged their giggling heads. Her kindly mother really is the only reason Hydrocyon has any compassion in her at all. The only dragon besides her family she allowed past her sharp outer shell was a magnificent blue imperial named Eltanin. She admired his beauty and intelligence and decided maybe she could handle one more male in her life. Intensely loyal, she will fight for her brothers and mate to the death. |
