Biography
_____ |
Speak softly into the earth, and although you may think that your words are lost, there will always be someone who remembers. Everything is permanent in soil and stone. And in the end, it is only the earth that knows the past, so it is proper that only the earth should know the future. That only the earth should speak prophecy. In her first life she was a druid. But knowing the will of nature means knowing that the will of nature is forever changing, and that the agents of its will are forever in flux as well. When she went underground — yes, underground, beneath the rocks and the dirt, beneath the loam and the gravel and beneath the sun and its shadows — it felt as if the entire world shuddered into place, as if this was where she had always been meant to be, even if she had never anticipated it. She roamed through the caves, heard the drip of water against rock, and felt impossibly, unspeakably safe. As if this world that she entered was the only world for her, after all. There is always a throng of souls twisting in and out of her caves, and she keeps track of them in an absent-minded kind of way, never particularly caring whether they come or go. There is one soul, though, that shimmers to her like sunlight on water, and when he enters she is sure to call out to him, to beckon him forth so that he knows his way through her maze, so that he knows where it is that he must go. Certainly, the others matter, but there is no bond like the bond between a Guardian and her Charge. Although she knows of his less savory activities, of the infection that irrevocably darkened his outlook on his life, she feels an attachment to him that is impossible to ignore. When he grows near, the rest of the world dims to a mindless haze, a dull roar. Others come to her asking her to tell their futures. They care little for her skills as a druid now, now that she can hear the whispering voices of the earth. They bring her offerings, sweeping branches, delicate twigs. One touch of a stick and she hears three prophecies chime in her ears, three possibilities for the tree limb’s bearer that she translates to dragontongue as faithfully as she can. When they are gone, the wood withers and dies, the life gone from within it. Secretly, she mourns this, and she suspects that her Charge knows. When he comes, he does not ask this of her. He never does. | ___ |
