Biography

sword_1_by_rexcaliburr-dbedyub.png Taranis
The seed is strong.

Taranis cursed as the hot liquid spilled on the wooden table burning a hole into it. He should have moved that experimental set up to the stone table as he had originally planned. Now another table was ruined. Strangely, wooden tables were a rare commodity here. One would think when living inside a forest full of trees, wooden furniture would not be hard to come by. But, as he had learned very soon after arriving here, no tree was cut down for furniture or firewood in the Viridian Labyrinth. Nature dragons were a strange crowd. Their tree houses had tables and chairs and shelves but like the house itself, they were part of the living tree somehow. Furniture for the Citadel, the accommodations in the Crystal Valley and the Caverns were either made of stone or from trees cut down by the elements or simply time. He sighed deeply. Although he liked the lush green forests and his new home he sometimes wished he was back in the Shifting Expanse. There, any vegetation that was in the way was simply removed. And nobody cared if the wood for their furniture was from a tree that had reached the end of his life naturally or by other means.

Taranis carefully removed his alchemical tools from the wooden table. He hoped the mishap with the spilled liquid wouldn’t ruin his experiment. He had been working on this for so long. And finally, the preliminary results were promising. Well, at least the liquid hadn’t spontaneously ignited when it came in contact with air. There was nothing he could do about its acidic qualities. Looking more closely at the table, he noticed that the liquid was still corroding the wooden panel. Perhaps it was better to put some gloves on before he continued his experiment. It was a shame the creatures he planned to use his newest invention on were not of flesh and blood. Well, at least not of living flesh and blood anymore. Though he was sure any moral objections would crumble into dust if those bloody serpents launched another attack on the Sanctuary. All was fair in love and war. Humming softly, he put on his protective gloves and goggles but when he turned around, he stumbled back a few feet.

He had come face to face with Lugaidh and his commander wasn’t looking too happy. Taranis cleared his throat. “Well, uhm … commander, I didn’t expect you down here.” Lugaidh frowned at him. “Obviously not.” he said while his gaze lingered disapprovingly on the ruined table. “This is the third one this month if I counted correctly? Do I really have to remind you again and again to take better care of valuable equipment?” Taranis took a deep breath to calm himself. How he resented the fact that this foppish underbred Pearlcatcher was his superior. “But commander, it’s only a table. Everywhere else tables are everyday objects, replaced in a jiffy and nobody makes a fuss. Just here…” Lugaidh cut him short. “Just here they are not. And until you learn that the value of objects differs depending on local customs and you learn to respect other dragons’ ideas of value, you will have to make due without those “everyday objects”. Maybe you will appreciate the value of wooden goods more if you live without them for a while. I will have the wooden furniture removed from your laboratory and your personal quarters. Let’s see if their value increases when you have slept on the stone floor for a few weeks.” Taranis ground his teeth trying very hard not to lose his temper but the struggle must have shown on his face. Lugaidgh’s eyes flashed dangerously and he hissed threateningly. “If you behave like a spoiled brat, Taranis, I will treat you like one. I don’t care that you are Pulchrior’s son, here you are just another Night Warrior under my command. So, keep your temper under control or I will teach you a lesson you will never forget.” Taranis backed away further, boiling with rage. But he forced himself into a submissive posture, he had seen Lugaidgh fight and he knew that he would lose out to him. And despite what his commander might think, he wasn’t stupid. He didn’t trust his voice though and kept his mouth shut hoping his submissive posture would be enough. Fortunately, Lugaidgh wasn’t stupid either and didn’t want to carry it too far. Thus, after a last disdainful look, he wheeled around and left the cavern.

Taranis exhaled with relief. He hadn’t even noticed that he had held his breath. Still trembling with rage, he followed his commander out of the laboratory. His research had to wait. What he needed now was a more physical activity to let off some steam. When he arrived at his quarters to grab his sword, all his wooden furniture, including his bed, had already been removed. That ******* was nothing if not fast. Cursing under his breath he grabbed his sword and stormed off to the training grounds.

Information
Name // Taranis
-- Origin of name // A long forgotten deity primarily associated with thunder and lightning.

Role // Warrior & Alchemist

Personality/Background // Taranis is a direct descendant of the legendary founders of the Night Warriors and he is very proud to be Pulchrior’s and Kidara’s son, maybe a bit too proud at times. Like all Night Warriors he is a formidable warrior but his true passion is Alchemy. He has his own laboratory deep down in the caverns where he researches all sorts of explosives and occasionally poisons. His stun grenades are legendary and although not all of the more old-fashioned and traditional warriors approve of them, they must admit that they are useful. Taranis himself doesn’t really care what others say about him or his choice of weapons. He survived so far, which is more than can be said of many a warrior or scout here. The Shrieking Wilds often seem like a tranquil place but nothing could be farther from the truth. He learned that very soon.
Taranis is very much aware of his family’s heritage and can be pretty aloof. When he first arrived, he had problems to accept Lugaidgh as his superior, a dandy Pearlcatcher who is far more distantly related to the founders than he is (though this is true for everyone except his siblings). However, Lugaidh wouldn’t be the commander of the Sanctuary’s Night Warriors if he wasn’t a capable leader and outstanding fighter. Grudgingly and over time, Taranis accepted his position in the unit. He came to respect his leader though they will never be true friends.

Familiar // Tesla
-- Role of familiar // The huge bear is endemic to the Shifting Expanse and raising a cub to be a dragon’s familiar is not an easy task. They don’t only bite and scratch, but also use electric surges and even lightning to attack their enemies. Earning the trust and respect of such a creature is difficult. But when the little cub was fished out of the water after a devastating storm rainfall, Taranis pleaded with his father to keep him. Eventually his father relented and the cub which Taranis named “Tesla” has been following him loyally ever since.
