Malokingi's Mercenaries
Malokingi | Andromeda | Manowar | Silke | Splendor | Coil

About
Malokingi co-leads a war troop with his lover, Andromeda. His stately appearance and reserved disposition are a thin veneer over his bloodlust.

Job
Manowar may create the plans, but Malokingi calls the shots on the actual field of battle. He usually follows in the wake of Andromeda and Splendor, watching their backs and cleaning up anything the others leave behind. He relies on precision and a carefully crafted selection of poisons.

Lo! Death has reared himself a throne
In a strange city lying alone
Far down within the dim West,
Where the good and the bad and the worst and the best
Have gone to their eternal rest.
-Edgar Allen Poe

Malokingi knew who his mother was, though his father had explained to him, calmly, that she wouldn't know him. He snuck out of the den sometimes to watch her. She was a statue on the highest rock, perfectly still but for the slow turn of her head. He mimicked her careful watch, hunched beneath an overhang behind her, together scanning the horizon.

"Teach me to fight!" He begged Luna, leaping from the ground on one side of her massive hand, over her arm, to land on the other. The other hatchlings were all over Brutus, climbing up the Guardian's back and tumbling down his sides, making a game of it as he lazed indolently in the sun, occasionally flicking a wing to send the cheerfully shrieking hatchlings flying. Malokingi preferred Luna, her great serpentine body like his father and her careful watchfulness like his mother. Luna would tolerate his presence so long as he did not actually land on her, so he made it practice to see how high and how far he could jump. It was very far. He was so big and strong! "I want to be like Mom and you and Brutus!"

Luna rumbled at him. "Only when your father gives permission. Not before."

"But-!"

"Not before. Ask again and I will say no."

Malokingi pounced extra hard, digging his claws into the dirt with a grumble. He was big enough now! It wasn't fair!

The screaming was terrible. Malokingi hid, trembling, but he could not close his ears and he could not look away. He didn't know where the other younglings had gone, only that they fled, scattering, when Brutus roared at them to run. Moments later Brutus was screaming and Luna charged from the sky, claws leading, to collide with something beneath the waves. Only now Luna hadn't reappeared and big strong Brutus was thrashing in the sand and against all this Malokingi's claws suddenly seemed very, very small.

Malokingi stared at the water. Luna would come back. She would come back and Brutus would stop making that awful noise and everything would be ok again.

The lamps were turned low in the clinic. Malokingi peered in through the open door. It was hard to believe that the small, huddled dragon sleeping inside was Brutus. Brutus was big and strong and lazy and not afraid of anything. This dragon wasn't big. This dragon was almost the same size as Malokingi, huddled into the corner of the room in a frightened bundle. He was so still and so small, like the bodies of Malokingi's friends found in their inadequate hiding places after the invaders finally fled.

Something cold and angry solidified in Malokingi's chest as he stood there in the darkened hall.

"You shouldn't be here, Malokingi." He jumped, turning guiltily to face Caladrius. "Let him rest."

Malokingi let himself be herded out the door.

Malokingi only saw his mother fight once. She was fast and small and vicious. When the bigger dragons fought, they simply swatted smaller opponents out of the sky, throwing their weight around and barreling headlong into danger. Brutus wouldn't be able to fight like that any more. If he couldn't fight like Luna did, then he needed to learn to fight like Malokingi's mother.

But Brutus didn't seem interested in fighting much of anything. When he finally left Caladrius' care, he slunk through the halls with unsteady feet and wide eyes. He jumped when anyone approached him. He didn't go outside.

Malokingi's father said Brutus only needed time, but Malokingi heard the merchants and other travelers talk, how they said the roads and seas grew worse by the day. If Brutus wouldn't learn how to fight, then Malokingi would.

"I'm going to fight." Malokingi threw it in his father's face like a dare. "I'm going to make it my life."

Ganymede blinked at him. "If that is what you wish for yourself."

Malokingi found this response suspicious. "You never wanted me to fight."

"I wanted you to experience what it was to be a hatchling. You are nearly grown now. You have seen war and death. If that is what you choose, then you have my blessing."

"I don't want your blessing." Malokingi wanted his father to be angry like he was angry. Ganymede was never angry at anything. Not at how Malokingi's mother never acknowledged anyone, not at the beastclans who hurt their friends, not at Brutus or Luna or anyone else who failed to protect their home.

But Malokingi's father simply watched him, saying nothing.
