"Sorry. We were merely talking to ourselves."

The brambles crack; churn, under our toes. The small Damien and I...we travel across the murky path littered with jagged trees to a destination unbeknownst even to us. The plagued lands that birthed him neglected him; a suffocating urge to conserve the abandoned hatchling had taken over. Our retreat was an absolute necessity if I was to ensure his survival. His irritable demeanor--albeit formidable--had eventually waned enough for my coaxing to take considerable effect, the pursuit of similar goals seemingly piercing through his pride's thick shell. Now, the plague-born Pearlcatcher presently cycles his pearl along the earth in our hunt for new, welcoming lands, his shining crimson eyes fixated on the trail ahead.

The silence of the night is buzzing in our heads... deafening to our ears.

Vines begin to creep and inch closer, their thorns glistening as much as the allotted moonlight would allow. Warning sirens blared throughout my thoughts, roaring and shrieking and resounding over and over, yet I was unable to move. The brier and nettle lash out, taking fierce hold of our limbs and snatching us apart, threatening to have us swallowed whole by the grove. Voices from the forest coo in my ears, enticing me to give in, concede, surrender. I scream; call out to Damien, though no sound came forth from my tongue. With newfound jurisdiction over my muscles I grasp at the air for him; struggle to recede from the thicket's tendrils to no avail. The plague-born attempts the same motion fruitlessly, thrashing and flailing his young paws, seeking to liberate himself from the turmoil.

For the first time in the meager days we had spent together, Damien sheds a tear.

The bramble covers our bodies, protruding thorns carving agglomerations of incisions into our scales and into our flesh. The pain sears; it scorches through me unendurable and I cry and I shriek and I shout and I weep for my agony's conflagration to end, please stop just PLEASE STOP IT HUR—

The light. It shines through our lids; rouses us. The others... they, too, are pulled from their slumbers by the rays. The time of waking must be upon them.

We suppose we will follow suit.
