Biography

Somber Spirit
"Hey, Shadow, I've been looking for you— What is that?" Roundabout froze in midair, dropping onto the platform with a light thump before scrambling awkwardly on his short legs around to look at Shadow from the front.

"Hello, Roundabout," Shadow returned. He flicked one side of his crest but didn't look away from the skull he held in his claws.

Roundabout peered at it, then flattened his ears against his skull. "Is that a squirrel skull? Tell me that's not a squirrel skull. Wait, are you—"

"I'm attempting to communicate with the dead."

Roundabout didn't have the reach to smash his palm against his face the way Liminal frequently did, but he thought maybe he understood why she did that now. "You're attempting to communicate with a dead squirrel?" When only silence and an unreadable flicker of Shadow's crest answered him, he added, "That is a dead squirrel, right? Because that's way too small to be a dragon."

"It's proof of concept." Shadow shifted the weight of the skull to one hand and reached down to grab a flask of something that Roundabout hadn't seen before. Liquid spilled out all over the skull before Shadow dropped the flask and shifted back to a two-handed grip. The skull glowed.

Roundabout skittered backwards, sideways. "Look," he said, maybe a little loudly, but who could blame him? Nobody wanted to hear what squirrels had to say. Or skulls. Or squirrel skulls. "I just came by to ask you if you wanted to head out with me to… somewhere. Somewhere not here. Maybe you could communicate with the dead later! Or maybe not at all."

Shadow finally looked away from the skull, which didn't stop glowing. His blank eyes fixed on Roundabout's face. "The dead know the future," he said.

"What?!" Roundabout squawked. "That's unfair! What do they need to know about the future for? They're dead! Also, what do you need to know the future for?"

Shadow stared at him for a moment longer, then looked back at the skull. He didn't answer. His crest didn't so much as move.

"Look, let's go exploring," Roundabout tried. "That's way better than knowing the future. Come on, come on, you're a Wind dragon, right?"

Shadow's crest dipped for a moment. "I don't like traveling."

Roundabout clicked his teeth together in thought. "There might be skulls? Real skulls! Dragon skulls. Seriously, what's a squirrel going to tell you about the future? They don't even remember where they buried their nuts for the winter."

"It's proof of concept," Shadow repeated stubbornly.

"Nooo," Roundabout moaned. He flopped onto the smooth, finished wood of the platform and wiggled. He'd intended for it to be a dramatic gesture, but it actually felt nice against his scales. Distracted, he wiggled for a few moments longer, then popped his head up to see the effect of his display.

Shadow was mouthing words at the skull, eyes fixed on it and crest flared out.

"Ugh, fine," Roundabout muttered. He rolled upright and sniffed, lifting his head high. "I'll go without you this time. And I won't bring back any skulls." He paused, but Shadow only flicked a brief glance his way. Roundabout sighed loudly. "You weirdo. What kind of Wind dragon likes staying at home and talking to skulls?" But, in case that made Shadow feel bad, Roundabout reached out as he swirled up off the platform to pat his friend's tiny head.

Next time! Tomorrow, he'd try again. Shadow would have already determined that talking to skulls didn't work by then, and Roundabout would be able to convince him to come on a really short adventure. Yes! That would be what Roundabout would do.

Behind him, he thought he heard the incomprehensible chitter of an animal, but he didn't look back. It was probably one of the Coatls trying to fake him out.
