Long ago, there was a dragon so large that he would swallow the moon and only return it when he grew tired of its weight in his belly. This dragon was great and powerful like the flight deities of this world. Unlike them, this god went forgotten and so forgot himself and his own powers, curling into himself to become a stalk of bamboo in a forest.

One day a childless dragon cut the bamboo to find an egg inside. Overjoyed, the dragon brought it home to its nestmate and they watched over the egg, waiting for it to hatch. When it did, a beautiful dragon unfurled her moonlit wings and yawned wide. The dragon who found her remembered a tale his father had told him long ago about the god who swallowed the moon, and named Bakunawa thus.

Bakunawa grew to be immensely lovely and desired by other dragons in the land, and yet she remained always quiet and interested only in the heavens, crying every full moon like her heart was breaking, rejecting food and mates. Eventually her parents tired of this strange behavior and sought a solution, traveling the world over to help her on her search for happiness.

On their journey, Bakunawa saw many wondrous and horrible things, but they did not answer the emptiness of her heart. One day her foster parents were swept away in a hurricane as they traveled the sea together, and she washed up on the shore near the Laurel Clan den.

Undine found her, and with the help of other dragons, Bakunawa was carried home. Bakunawa has told them little of herself, and tends to talk to the air like she sees other dragons that aren't there.
