Biography
Palak accountant | treasurer Born in Old Caravanserai before it's destruction, Palak worked as a go between for it's tradesmaster, Makeda, and the skyboat captain Mahsao for a few short years before it was abandoned. When the clan left it's destroyed lands, Palak went off on his own and was found by Fade, our own clan's master of coin, on a trading expedition to nearby clans in the Hewn City region. Fade brought him back to the Refuge where he took Palak to be his own apprentice, but he found he did not have all too much to teach the young fae. Palak had learned well in Old Caravanserai, and took well to the Refuge's caravaneers and artisans. He learned how to navigate the winding halls of the Refuge easily, and eventually took some of the weight off Fade's shoulders and became the primary go between of the gatherers and artisans to the caravaneers. He helps them decide what can be sent along with the caravans to be sold, and makes sure they get a fair cut for their work. He doesn't leave the Refuge as much as his master, but he doesn't seem to mind. He is happy where he is, though he misses his birthclan sometimes. Fade makes sure he is on any expedition to his birth region. What he doesn't miss though, is his former teacher Madeka. He realized shortly into his tenure as Treasurer of the Silver Desire that the working conditions under Madeka weren't..... exactly ideal. He much prefers the caravaneers he works with now, but his contact with the Merchant Queen of Moshkaran has led to an irritating situation: spying. Madeka's daughter Perpherine left Moshkaran under scandalous conditions, and Madeka has been using her leverage a delicate piece of information to force Palak to pass letters to her daughter, and more covertly, report back on Perpherine's actions and movements as she prefers to use her mother's letters as kindling. What Madeka has on Palak stems from her previous association with Palak's mother, Galswintha. Unbeknownst to Galswintha at the time, she was about to get swept up in one of Madeka's devious ploys for power. Madeka used a cursed object she'd retrieved from Ostraka to place a curse on Gal, forcing her to slowly shift into a Runic Bat, unless she took an antidote regularly- an antidote that Madeka provided, "helpfully," in exchange for Galswintha's position as an informant. She even offered access to cursebreakers as long as Gal complied. Eventually, Galswintha had a son, Palak, who seemed to be perpetually caught midshift: batlike ears, webbed limbs, hypersensitivity to noise, and many other side effects that Galswintha had herself experienced. Out of anger that Madeka had inadvertently cursed her son, Gal broke her contract with her blackmailer. Of course, this caused Gal's condition to..... rather swiftly escalate without the antidote. Eventually, she lost herself and fully transformed into a Runic Bat, which no one but Madeka knew about, functionally orphaning Palak in his childhood. When he apprenticed with the merchant queen a few years later, he'd no idea of her meddling in his past, and in his genetics. Now, Madeka has told Palak a rather edited version of his past after she'd found her daughter fled to Refuge: nothing about Madeka's influence in his mother's curse, but informed him, not very kindly, that he too would risk fully shifting into a bat like his mother should he not comply with her wishes. Palak, being in the dark about his past up until then, believed her despite the proof to the contrary: no changes in his physiology throughout his entire life. He now unwillingly looks in on Perpherine, and carries out Madeka's wishes, albeit as unhelpfully as he can.
